Hello there,
I am planning on heading out to Japan and have been offered an interview with the California Language Institute... I have tried a search on this (very useful and informative) forum, but it rendered no results. Has anyone had any experience with them?

Have you had a look on the Job Information (Japan) Journal? Quite a few CLI posts on there. |

| Oh, yes. Thanks, I found it. Got a GEOS and a CLI interview offer.. but both on the same day! Turned down the CLI one and now not sure if I made the right choice. There are so many different opinions- it's hard to know which school is the best one to go for. |

this is just my personal opinion but if you are new to Japan and choosing between NOVA GEOS AEON and all the rest of the big chain schools and you are still overseas, when push comes to shove there is not really that much difference between them in terms of style. Competition for finding warm bodies here is cuthroat between the big schools, the style of teaching, textbooks, students, work and teaching hours, "perks" and various other things are virtually identical and only differ in degree. You are simply best to get a visa and land a job here, get some practical experience and then shop around once you have got your feet wet. Otherwise all you will do is eeny-meeny miny-mo among the schools and then wonder if you made the right choice. As a newbie you really can not afford to be too picky about your first teaching job.
I will also add that schools wont change their business culture to suit you, the new person, and you virtually have to take whatever they offer you. It doesnt really make much difference if they have a bad reputation or not or people whinge and moan about them. The big variable IMHO lies in your attitude, how adaptable you are to living in a foriegn country and adapting to different work rules, and what you bring to the table. Some of these people who moan on these sites have never had a full time job before and dont know that teaching actually means WORK. These entry level jobs are what you make them, and you can choose to be miserable or happy whereever you work, and be a glass half-empty or a glass half full kinda guy. |

Thanks for the advice, Doglover.
I was beginning to realise there's not much to choose between the bigger companies. At the moment it's really finding a stepping stone to achieve my goal of living and teacing in Japan, and as a new graduate (who hasn't lived abroad before), I think they all offer a reasonably hassle-free way to do this, with a pay packet I think I can manage on. I am trying to remain focused on the fact that the most important thing is gaining experience and using it to my advantage in the future. There's no way I'd expect to leave uni and walk into the 'perfect' job in any country and I have no qualms about hard work... I think I've been getting side-tracked by horror stories about cockroaches in the apartments, etc. You are definitely right though, the experience will be what I make of it and is not going to be determined by the fact that I stumbled on a couple of negative comments! |

| Is the name of the school cal institute or the company or owners. I worked for American World International School which is posted a few times on here and when you sign the contract the company name is CAL institute. They might be using this name now as they are having a difficult time finding teachers. If this is the case please read the posts about American World if you have any questions pls message me. |
