It gets you wondering what the buzz words are for our language. I'd like to think were not as repetitive, but that might not be true. I'm sure our commercials are littered with buzz words. But I'd be very surprised if scratching beneath the surface to the deeper inner meaning of atsui "its hot outside" has anything more to reveal.

The two words I learned early on were "Kawaii" (cute) and "Sugoi" (super/wonderful/excellent). If your students say these words, or other words like "samui" or "atsui" (plus desune!) I wouldn't stress over it. Just think of it as another opportunity for you to practice your Nihongo!

"Sure is hot, isn't it?"

"Yep, darned hot."

"yeah, totally."

"yeah"

In English it still seems a bit odd, but these are the conversations that we put out there when we think we should say something, but have nothing important to say. Also, have you ever noticed how much the eldery like to talk about the weather? I have a few neighbors here who will gladly chat about the rain, lack of rain, heat, heat compared to last year or even 20 years ago... Then again, my gramma in Canada is the same.

Listen to the "conversation" on the trains--nothing to say.

My students moan either "samui", "atsui" or "nemui". The other day it must have been in the high 20's and the students had the doors open which I found shocking. When asked, student replied, "Samui". She was complaining about the air-conditioning--private school, eh?

So, one day it can be too hot, the very next day too cold. I asked, "When is it just right?" Students responded, "Kotatsu no naki ni."

A nation of moaners?

Grin and bare it!

Enjoy yourself,

How about "Sou desu yo ne !"

I hear this one all the time, in a variety of situations !

It's even more fun to use this phrase, responding to just about everything everyone says....ha ha ha !

Has anyone seen the film Ohayo by Yasujiro Ozu? There's a great scene where a young boy moans about how adult conversation consists only of cliche phrases like the ones listed above. Although I'm sure conversation crutches like these exist in all languages, it does seem like they're more widely used in Japanese than in English.
