I was ill and took a few (unpaid!) days off work recently. My dispatch company seems required by the BOE to find a substitute teacher (yeah, like the English program's ultimate success depends on my presence every day!), but with my absence being at short notice, I guess they couldn't be too choosy about who they called in...

When I got back to the school I was asked if I knew the sub teacher, and got the idea he'd left early on a certain day for some reason (the teacher telling me this wasn't a JTE so had limited English). Next thing I knew, I was being informed that the BOE bigwigs were coming to observe all my lessons the next day(WTF?!)...

I thought they were p-ed off with me because I'd taken a few days off - is this guy a committed teacher?! - but it turned out that (apparently) the sub had (deliberately, knowingly, for some nefarious purpose?) followed some girls into a toilet, and generally hadn't impressed the JTEs ("hidoi"). So, my dispatch company was being hauled over the coals about "the type of people they choose to hire", something like that. (I should say, I get the idea that some of the teachers at this school are right gossips).

Anyway, I feel a bit bad for getting my company into trouble (even though it's not my fault), and wondered how blown up (out of all proportion) these sort of problems can become (my company hasn't gotten back to me yet about what was said about its teachers generally, or me in particular...I gave at least one good lesson, so I'm hoping that's me at least off of the hook).

Have you guys heard similar stories, and what was the outcome? I guess it will all blow over...that is, the contract will be secure until at least next April... Confused Maybe the BOE guys welcomed the slightest whiff of a scandal and a chance to act like FBI agents?

My own opinion is it's maybe just a case of one bad apple (like I say, I've never met the guy), but with what some BOEs are now offering, they maybe can't expect to be dealing with perfect companies and are lucky to get whatever halfway-decent teachers they do end up with!

Storm in a teacup, mountain out of a molehill etc? Will keep y'all posted...

Look at it from the school's side. First day a substitute shows up,he does that. I'd certainly call for help to investigate.

Just keep doing your good job and let it rest. You're not the one under suspicion, but they are just trying to cover their bases. No harm in that. How long have you been working there?

Why are you so sarcastic and dismissive about this? Don't you think the school deserves a replacement for the classes you handle? I don't understand your attitude over this statement.

The English language industry in Japan and elsewhere does seem to attract its share of weirdos and perverts.
Situations such as this do occur rather frequently, for the most part they are covered up.
Just do your job and you'll be fine. Your dispatch company may end up losing the contract though, and may or may not blame you for it.

Lover, can't you go back to Sidney (sic) and leave the rest of us alone? Or better yet, at least concoct a new story? You've been trying to sell that one on three (?) different occasions. No one's buying. Rolling Eyes
