|

Hello to all,
I've been here before, but under a different name (I provided some tax advice to various people almost a year ago). Now I need some help myself.
I have finally decided to go to china, and have recieved enthusiastic replies from Four recruiters/schools. I wish to find out from anyone in the know which of these schools/recruiters is trustworthy, and which isn't. Any help will be greatly appreciated. The schools/recruiters are:
1) Shandong Electric Power International School
2) New Times
3) Sino-American Denver Foreign Languag School
4) Ladder English Training School
So can anyone help me?
Cheers, Mephisto |

Do a search here. I posted about Shandong Power school already, last year. It's not a nice place, administration-wise. They charge you for Visa, Medical, etc. It may have changed somewhat, there are a large group of FTs there now. make sure you up your salary to at least 6500...don't take their offer of 4000.. get as many concessions as you can before you go there. If they want you, make sure they pay to get you! |

Thanks Manfred Von Richthoffen,
I'll make sure to look around for your description of the school. I also found quite a bit here on New Times, though I'm not quite sure who to trust. Can anyone else help?

Hebei New Times is not a school. They are an agency that recruit teachers for schools. I think it's safe to say that there are people who are satisfied with them, and there are people who are not.
The only time they responded to my application, they told me to go to China with a tourist visa. |

Hm, thanks. What about the other two places? Has anybody dealt with them?

Hey,
What about Aipusen English Training Insitute?
Cheers,

Ps, sorry about the volume of questions, but I'm in a critical choosing stage right now, and would not like to get stuck with something like the EF nightmare some of you have been having on this board. |

Another one: Heng Feng Foreign Languages School. Anybody know them?
I just thought of an idea: There should be a teacher-rated list of all of these schools in terms of a number of criteria like living accomodations, honesty, etc.
Again, sorry for being a board nazi and hugging the "first entry" spot with this useless - to - most - people post, but hey, if you need tax information, I can help you out.

Many of the schools you mentioned are franchises and each branch is different from another. I recognize quite a few of the names. If you do a search on the forum and on the job information journal, I am very sure you will find some feedbacks. |

Mephisto,
All of your questions are quite correct and they deserve a good answer. I will try to help you as much as I can, based upon my own experience and the experience of my peers and colleagues.
1. Contrary to much of the bad publicity on this Board in particular regarding New Times, the agency in Hubei, they have actually baled out several of my friends who did "midnight runs" on jobs where they had serious problems. Yes, the chances of your ending up somewhere rural are at least quite possible, but they do NOT deserve the tremenduous amount of maligning that they have received on this Board. Remember -- they are a business and not a charitable foundation. And for the now-old comments of Mr. Farkas, just disregard them. He has created quite a name for himself in China, and not of much has been flattering -- this from colleagues of mine.
2. As for Heng Feng, AVOID IT at all costs. There are plenty of postings ALL over the Internet on this subject and on www.englishschoolwatch.org and on Nate's, I believe.
3. The other two schools are private language-mill schools and I personally always tread lightly when even THINKING of a private language-mill school. Do you not have a university degree that would allow you access to government schools and universities or is your principal criteria focused on RMB?
4. If you e-mail me privately I will put you in touch with some honorable recruiter and with at least one honorable school that I know personally.
Regards from this Side of the Ocean,
Alex P. |

Hey to all,
thanks for the replies; I sent private emails to both Alex and Chang. Thanks Clark for the website. As always, the more feedback the better, so if anyone else has stories/reccomendations/warnings, I'll be more than happy to read them.
Cheers,

Hey Alex,
I tried sending you a reply to your stated email, but you seemed not to recieve it. I responded via the private message function on this board; hopefully you recieved that one. Any help is greatly appreciated (and if you could point me towards some schools with a good reputation, I will be forever indebted).
Cheers,

I just arrived here last week using the services of New Times and things have been great so for. I mentioned to them that I wanted a uni job and I got it. They even found me a part time gig and a chance to stay with a Chinese family until the fall term begins. Roger, the Aussie answering emails, was upfront and honest as far as I can tell. Check my reply to the post about them.
PM me if you have any question although I might not be able to answer 'till monday since my host family is taking me to Taishan mountain for the weekend.
