Hi guys
Please disregard my post about NET. I'm interested in teaching in schools in China ideally middle school. I like the challenge of 50 kids in a class and having a noticable effect on the ones who want to learn.
Can you get work in Private/public schools (do private schools even exist in China?).
If not, how likely would I be able to get a university job factoring in I am only going to be 23 when I arrive there.
Thanks!

Private language schools are a dime a dozen in China, and they are all competing for foreign-faced teachers. The question is whether they are legally allowed to hire foreign teachers, and if so whether they can get you work permit and residence permit so you can legally work and live in China. You also need to do a lot of online research (like on here) to learn about other FTs' experience with them. Quite a few language school chains have a very poor reputation in China.
Public schools (especially colleges and universities) tend to ask for university graduates and some even go as far as asking for some kind of TEFL/TESOL certification. This is especially true in more developed areas (and as such higher-paying and higher standard of living). Poorer places will sometimes take non-native speakers without any post-secondary education, no relative experience, and no TEFL certification though that is becoming rarer and rarer.
My best suggestion is for you to post some job-wanted ads and see what kind of offers you get. |

Well, first you should decide where you want to work? University, public middle school, or private school. They vary a lot and teaching at a public school to 50 middle school students might be a totally different experience than teaching at a private school. It may also be difficult to find a private school with a class size of 50. There are also many questions you should answer to better make your decision: When do you want to come to China? do you have a degree? Do you have any teaching experience? What city do you want to teach in? etc...

I work at a private school. And (very rare) it is legal.
Relatively good conditions and management.
Students are tough and the parents are tougher.
Class sizes - many of them around 35-40.
This school is always looking for teachers.
I AM NOT A RECRUITER (almost a swear word in my book).
But if you are interested send me your resume by pm and I will pass it on.
This is Inner Mongolia in PR China

you are 23, right? It shouldn't be a problem teaching at a uni, I've seen younger folks do it and they were good at it.
But what are your qualifications? do you have a degree? experience? No degree = no job in a public school most of the time (I've seen exceptions) |

I think some of the answers you have generated are wildly overoptimistic and misleading. What is a PRIVATE school? A school is an institution that teaches according to a syllabus and follows an academic programme. I infer from your question that you would prefer working in a SCHOOL as opposed to a (private) TRAINING CENTRE. There are NOT many private schools although their number is increasing by leaps and jumps; however, you also need to state clearly what you want to teach since PRIVATE SCHOOLS will more likely want you to do QUALITY TEACHING, i.e. teach a subject other than useless so-called "oral English". They will want you to be able to bring their students' English up to an internationally acceptable level; to do this you will need to be sufficiently well-qualified. In some private schools Englishis the medium of instruction, so you might need to be able to teach a subject other than English.
As for TRAINING CENTRES, they do come by the dozens a dime but then again, they seldom put you in front of middle-schgool students.
I do not understand why a newbie should want to teach a crowded classroom of Chinese English learners You will not find many well-motivated students among such huge numbers, and the slackers will make such a mayhem youcannot focus on your job. |
