My best advice to all visitors is to stay clear from discos that are frequented by tourists looking for Russian dates in general. You never know what can happen to you, and you definately won't be appreciated as a human being let alone as a forgeiner. Which undermines part of the reason why some people go to Turkey to teach in the first place. Mine is to make a difference in this world.

It may take a bit longer and a few nights of lonliness but try hitting up a regular disco where Turkish women go and get to know them as you would in your own Country and your experience will be alot more rewarding I promise you. Good things come to those who are patient and wait.

As for the Russian and Eastern European women this is pretty sad because most of these girls are extremely nice, open minded and easy to talk to. It's too bad they get exploited in places like these. So if you don't see them with smile's on their faces there's a reason.

I've been to similar places where this is an adventure for young guys, they make this like their whole evening, looking for the hottest girls at the lowest rates. Not only is it pathetic but the only place they end up in is at the cop shop in the middle of the night having to explain to the cops how you got ripped off and how your friend got his nose broken. Meanwhile the girl your were fighting for is already on her third trick. Not that this happened to me because it wouldn't in a million years, but I can just sense the scenario.

Besides, no one is going to brand you for coming to Turkey as a single male and wanting some action to begin with, there's nothing wrong with that, but if you look for cheap thrills it symbolizes you have money on you and that is what can possibly perpetuate the problem or misunderstanding.

The rest of Turkey I hear is beautiful.

Indeed it is. So is Istanbul. Even some good can be found in the tourist spots. What I don't get are these dire doom and gloom postings which cover dangers mentioned in all tourist guides, and which can be avoided with the least bit of common sense. They leave a bad taste in my mouth.

A bit of streetwise and a bit of luck, I'd say... There are plenty of times I wasn't being at streetwise but I must have been very lucky...

Hmm.. this warning is nice.. and very informative.. but I see nothing in it warning the teachers of the so called language centers that are rather criminal too. I think most people that are looking for "the hottest girls at the lowest rates" kinda know this is risky and can be adventurous, to say the least. But how about the language centers looking for the hottest teachers for the lowest rate? hehe.. Yes.. Istanbul is full of adventure.. from good to bad.. but lets not leave out the adventure we encounter just trying to work for the criminally insane language centers and the henchmen running them. Now..lets try to have some fun..and play nice together.. and always watch eachothers' backs.. Very Happy

to reiterate everyone else, in big cities and tourist traps, one has to be careful and not do anything stupid. and yes a little luck can help when you are doing stupid things.

but istanbul and the tourist traps within have a lot of great spots to see and this thread is... well i am sorry but, i did have a bit of a giggle when i read the op.

however, i did have a friend who was wandering istiklal drunk one night and met a cute eastern european girl. he was pretty psyched when she gave him her phone number. she then proceeded to proposition him and said for 200ytl, he could do whatever he wanted to her. he only had 20ytl on him. later that night (about a half hr or so he thinks) he got mugged for everything in his possession.

Was he a tefler?

''whatever he wanted'' and he only had 20 on him? Jesus Christ. Couldn`t he have run home and got some more money? Who goes out for the night with just 20 on them? I got more than that on me when I go to Migros.

"Justme" the point of this is to educate possible Teflers of some possible dangers in Turkey. I'm sorry if this sports some type of confusion for you. So what if people can find this out in tourist guides? It's here.

we had a teacher who got taught in one of these. he was just trying to be friendly, not out to get whatever. the whole thing scared the .. out of him. It is in the guidebooks and the people who get sucked into it are like moths to flame, a little light on the commonsense.

and why does everything have to turn to complaints about schools here? geez. 31 said he wanted to bury the hatchet but instead he keep sharpening it. i have been very good about not "bickering". it's a waste of time because it's the same dam thing over and over.

the rest of istanbul and turkey is beautiful. not perfect, but i sure like it, and perhaps that is part of its charm. in a city as old and as big as this of course there will be tourist ripoffs, maalesef.

Not THE SCHOOLS but one chain of bucket shops and their spawn.
