I'm an ESL teacher with three years experience (Sapporo, Japan) and am now just travelling. I'm considering where to go next to teach for a couple years, and I'd like some feedback as to whether Shanghai or Singapore are nice places to be, and which you suggest. I'm into outdoor sports, but I also want a cosmopolitan setting with a cool ex-pat scene. Any wisdom out there? |

Isn't English the FIRST language of Singapore? So the chances of you finding any opportunities to teach it as a SECOND language seem rather small. |

A few years back Singapore Min of Ed were recruiting teachers for secondary schools. The application form was as thick as the London Telephone Directory. They may still be recruiting. Check with the Singapore Embassy or High Commission nearst to you (Cultural Attache).
Personally I think Shanghai would be more phone. Singapore is just too organised for me. (Like this new forum !!) |

I meant "fun" not "phone". Time for my morning coffee and doughnut. Low blood sugar !!!
Lord let me remember to press "PREVIEW" before "SUBMIT" ! |

O Scot, you are not a phoney man but a real fun man!
Yes, Singapore is hopeless, as are the Philippines and other countries. But Shanghai has a lot of thrill to offer although the quality of education there is somewhat less impressive than that students acquire in Singapore.
It is interesting to note that you chose Singapore as an alternative to Shanghai; why not Hong Kong? That is different from both places although it is part of China.
But Shanghai has more jobs and a vast hinterland for you to try your luck, and I am fairly certain you will find something.
Which I cannot promise to you RE Hong Kong! |

Never been to Singapore, only really know one person there, but I really think Shanghai would be for you, though getting the right job might take some leg work. I did not want to like Shanghai, but it's growing on me. There are a couple ex-pat web sites, don't have them off hand |
