Perhaps it would be more useful to have a comparative list made up of the correctly spelled word and typical misspellings, e.g., "accommodation" -> NOT "accomodation" or "accomadation". |

Good topic. As we all know English spelling is somewhat troublesome, but by checking your posts and using the EDIT function that is operable when you are signed in, you can go back and correct any mistakes even after you have submitted your message. |

Given that we are supposed to be Teachers, I find just about any spelling mistakes irritating - especially as it shows a lack of attention to detail which can only be a reflection on the poster's attitude.
But then I'm a pedant and expect others to correct me if I make a mistake and don't take it badly or sulk when it happens. |

5) benefited |
There are two accepted spellings of this word: "benefitted" is also a use according to my Canadian Oxford dictionary.
There are legit differences in usage here too, though you are probably bothered by the possessive misuse of "the government doesn't know it's place."
This is a mistake but it's one made so often and in highly literate media that there's talk of it emerging as an acceptable alternative spelling; it's certainly not Dave's-specific.

Yeah. Some native speakers simply don't know the diff, though others simply have a brain cramp. You know, many of us type pretty quickly, sometimes while exhausted after work or half-sloshed before bed, and certainly with no intentions of having our quick posts proofread before getting on with other things.
Ironic.
More than half of my Korean students can get it right!

Simple brain cramp. We all know the differences.
Sadly, some don't realize that "your" is not a phonetic equivalent to "you're" in "you're welcome" irregardless of pronounciation.
(I purposely misspelt/misspelled a couple of my own pet peeves from ESLers. ) |

It's "regardless of" not "irregardless of". |

Some people are just naturally poor spellers, but they still might be excellent teachers of English.
Also, Dave's ESL Cafe is an informal message board so I'm sure most posters proofread their writing more thoroughly when writing things that are more important.
I think that discouraged English learners can draw comfort from the fact that many English speakers misspell words because of the low phoneme-to-grapheme correspondence in English. |

Excellent list! Very insightful.
Looks like Im going to have to start using "rediculous" a bit more - it didn't even make the list!
Then there's also mellineum, which was fun for a few years but I just cant find a way to stick it into conversations nowadays. Guess I'll have to try harder.
But really, we're all off duty hear anyhow. |

|
|
All misspellings can be avoided by simply replacing the spellings we use for each and every word with IPA symbols. Hence, words like "sight" and "site" would be rendered in IPA in exactly the same way.
How would it be if we all started to use IPA instead of conventional spellings? I guess that if it normally takes us one second to write something quickly, it would take us about ten times longer just to stare at the screen, especially if we are half sloshed / blotto / inebriated / intoxicated / on the point of puking, trying to make out from the IPA symbols WTF the poster is talking about!
Try this one for size:
/he'lo/ /hau/ /a:/ /ju:/ ? /a:/ /ju:/ /fain/? /ai/ /am/ /fain/ /tu:/! /wel/ /wel/ /wel/! /ai/ /si:/ /rein/! /ai/ /mei/ /get/ /wet/!
(OK, not all letters on the conventional QWERTY keyboard can be used as "proper" IPA symbols; perhaps we ought to persuade PC manufacturers to make some changes? ) |
