Am I correct in thinking that it will be really hard to find work anywhere in Asia in December? I've learnt that China's term starts in Sept, so would be pretty hard to find work until about Feb. Does anyone know what would be the best country to teach in if I go about December? I have a bachelor's degree, but not a TESL certificate.

I'm really keen to teach English in somewhere in Asia. I would love to go to China (and ideally Japan, but I can only commit to about 6 months) but would consider most parts of Asia, except not really that keen on Korea.

Thanks for reading my post and for any help that might come my way.

Deadest time of year in Japan.

That would be a major problem in Japan. Contracts are 1-year long. So, unless you actually plan to come here and break a contract, you're not going to find work. Only one place hires for 3 months at a time, and you can't work for them for 2 consecutive "terms" (Westgate Corporation). Breaking a contract holds no punitive results, except...
1. You lose any year-end bonus that you might otherwise get. This is important because it amounts to the same as airfare, which you usually don't get from an employer to come here.
2. You perpetuate feelings that some employers have about foreigners being transient, unreliable people.
3. You let down students who have just gotten used to you.
4. You probably will just break even on setup costs.

Although it's true that the public school system would just be winding down in December, there are many private schools here, and most of them hire year - round. If you have a degree (and are white, etc.) then it should be no problem finding a job here with one of these schools. The work is harder than in the public school system, but you should still be working around 20 - 25 hours per week at decent pay.

Why exactly would you "love" to come to China? Is it the food, the women, what? Hopefully not the culture!

Why do I want to come to China?

Not the women, as I am hetero(!) but not the men either....
China just seems like a crazy land with heaps to explore. I'm from New Zealand and I imagine China to be the complete opposite - which is good as I am looking for a bit of culture shock.

Why is the work harder in the private schools? Do the students tend to be much more difficult?

Also, would you suggest I just turn up - or is it best to arrange a job before I leave?

Thanks heaps for your help so far.[/quote]

Guys, just give it a rest. If the 'culture' isn't your cup of tea or if you have problems with it, don't infect newbies with your own prejudices.

Huh?

When I was looking it was late fall. I had five good-paying job offers to choose from in South Korea in late November (just a Bachelor's degree in humanities and no experience) and started my job December 22.

The fact is: there's plenty of demand for English teachers in Asia so it's not exactly difficult to find openings at any time of year.

Well, it sounds like you have good reasons for coming here ... the culture shock factor is very big in China, yes.

Perhaps harder is the wrong word ... you will certainly be working more, though. In a private school you will likely be given plenty of hours, as many as you can handle. Those of us working in the public school system can get by on 16, "full time." Leaves lots of time for lounging about Dave's, as you can see!

I really think you should figure out what kind of place you'd like to go to before making a decision on this. If you decide to go to one of the big cities, you could easily turn up and find a job on an F or L visa.

On the other hand, you might feel better having a job lined up, with Z (employment) visa in - hand before you ever arrive here. This might be better if you decide to go to a small city, where there aren't as many job opportunities and it would be tough to just land here and "pound the pavement," looking for work.

Either way, China is a really great experience if you're open - minded and easy - going, not like some of the twats posting in this thread who apparently can't take a joke.
