My husband applied for some part-time English teaching work and was was given an information sheet that stated, "In accordance with Japanese tax regulations, 10% tax is deducted from Instructor's salaries."

Anyone know the exact situation re tax? We were under the impression that the tax rate was about 6%.

The tax rate is determined by the tax office, not your employer and is based on your monthly income. Average tax for a conversation school teacher is 7-8% on gross income. Is resident tax being taken out of your income? This can be another 3-4% of your salary that they take out as well as direct taxes.

If you file a tax return in February you can get any tax that was overpaid refunded to you by the tax office.

Ask specifically which tax was taken out, and just be glad you aren't on a working holiday visa, which gets 20% taken out.
