I was wondering about this very thing too. It's good to see this forum has real experts able to offer good info based on personal experience. I've come to right forum. Thank God for people with local knowledge! I wonder, Roger, if you could offer info on the following:
I've got the choice of three places apparently:
1. A place in Wuchang not far from the river and the Yellow Crane Tower.
2. A place within about 1 km of Hankou railway station.
3. The other place is near the business area of Hanyang.
All are standard Chinese tenement buildings it seems. They sound good on paper but I was wondering what the difference in rental was likely to be district to district and anything about local conditions. I'll be commuting across the river between two big banks for about 6 months.
I assume you're located in Wuhan, Roger. I'll pm you when I arrive. It would be good to meet up. I've enjoyed your travel postings. I'm not a teacher and you are but if you wouldn't mind, it would be good for me to make contact with a local expert. But in the meantime, any reliable local info you can give me would be good. I certainly don't want to arrive in China and find I've been led up the garden path by some China show-off. |

Bad news - I am not based in WUHAN.
For a non-teacher I guess chances are that your local contact (employer, business) will find some rentable accommodation in an estate. There are gated communities, and I am sure these exist in Wuhan too now, where you can rent a flat for a fixed term. It's not cheap but it's often worthwhile - high security, high housing quality, all amenities youmight need.
Try to find a location NEAR where you will spend most of your time doing your job; if you have a job in Wuchang you are unlikely to want to live in Hankou or Henyang! The commutes are too nerve-racking and costly! Henyang, Hankou and WUhang are three big cities joined together as a municipality separated by rivers. Each of them has millions of inhabitants! |
