Portugal seems to get little or no attention. I wonder why?

It's like Spain, very difficult to get work, even illegal work. NOt the best pay from what I've heard either.

There are language schools. part-time or split-shifts. You wille arn enough to put off starvation. EU and not much chance if your passport is from a non-EU member state.

Now we we will see the replies : "Unfair. there MUST be a way I can work in Portugal !"

If the jobs are not there, you cannot get one !

The lack of contributions from Portugal is puzzling. There IS work there (for holders of EU passports, as Scot47 says), because I've seen quite a few vacancies on the International House website, to give one example.

It could be that e-mail and the web are not as widely-used there ? Maybe getting a job there is a face-to-face thing ? That is often the case. Our anglo-saxon, northern assumption that you can do things by letter, fax and e-mail is not always valid in latin and other cultures. Many people in other cultures want to eyeball the individual before making a commitment. I think they might be right.

Portugal certainly has fewer computers per 1000 population than some European countries, but that's a reflection of being relatively poor (I stress "relatively").
Doing business face-to-face is by no means the preserve of the latins.
As for anglo-saxon - heyyyy!!! Some of us northern Europeans are Picts, the guys with short hairy legs whom the Romans couldn't conquer.

Actually, there is a language school there (Lisbon, I think) that hires US citizens. If you're interested, PM me. I just have a job ad buried somewhere that i could forward.

I'm from the UK and I've just recently passed my CELTA. The first job I applied for was with a language centre in Lisbon called 'The New Institute of Languages' and I seemed to have been successful. Has anyone out there ever heard of it and can anyone tell me anything about it. The pay is not 'too' bad so either I've been very lucky or I'm missing one very massive point (only to be revealed during my first week of teaching probably). Very Happy

Any help would be gratefully received....cheers!
