|
|
Sincere question directed to women teachers out there:
Where are the best places for women to teach (you know, to avoid harrassment, be respected, make friends, travel, feel safe, etc.)?
There's much discussion on the board about where American male teachers can find foreign women to date, but I don't see much devoted to the interests and concerns of single women teachers.....and as a prospective teacher, this would be MOST helpful.
I'm especially interested in the relations you're able to forge with foreign women. Do they avoid you? Are they eager to learn about you, your life in the states? Do they see you as a threat?
I'd like to learn from your experiences.
thanks,

Hi there,
I have only taught in China and Thailand but both places have been great. No problems being a woman at all.
The only problem with getting to know people is learning the language (unless I guess if you live in a big city).
I would recommend either as safe, easy, comfortable. Thailand wins over China though!

Japanese women can make nice friends. I would avoid the Middle East for the obvious reasons or anywhere as far east as India. Eastern Euro women can be soso friendly. |

In no way am I flaming here. This topic has been done a few times before. Why has there never been a thread about best place for men to teach. OK there has been the odd 50 page thread about asian women wanting western men, but it's not the same.
So, sorry to the OP, but where is the best place for men to teach? All too often in this industry men are overlooked. look at the writings of Penny Ure where she consistently refers to the teacher as she. Why? as she explains, her reason for doing so, most teachers are female. Really? Not in my experience.
does anyone have any figures on this?
Anyway, what was my point? Can't remember. dont you hate it when you go on a rant and and you you cant remember why you were ranting... or is that just me |

I am taken aback by the disparity in these two statements. Are you saying that women look for all of those things, yet the best places for men center only around finding women? Unfair and sexist and untrue. |

May be but she's right. We'd love to hear from "normal" men. |

That's what I was getting at. Glenski is just more eloquent than I. |

I doubt the OP meant to belittle men.
Without actually checking my facts (i.e., looking through old threads), Id bet that the majority of male-related posts are related to dating, not to teaching, safety, travel, etc. Why? Because men dont start threads asking about safety. They start threads asking where they can score with the ladies. That doesnt mean that women dont think about sex, or that men dont think about teaching, safety, travel, friends, etc.--it just means that the ladies and the men post different topics.
To answer the original post--Ive done fine in terms of safety everywhere Ive been--the Czech Republic, Japan, and now Chile (with the briefest of stints in China). Here I have to be a tad more careful, but the Czech Republic and Japan were both incredibly safe.
