Hi everyone,
I've been over on the Oman board for a bit, but now wonder if anyone here can tell me if there is an American University in Dubai? I'm now trawling for information on universities in the UAE that might be interested in hiring a 'teaching couple' (just to make sure we're doing the right thing...)
Thanks for a ny and all advice!

American University of Sharjah - just 23km from Dubai. Also, about to open in September - George Mason University (based in Virginia) to open in Ras al Khamaih |

Hi Z:
Thanks for this. I finally found it and have been looking through their website. They seem to be interested in hiring adjuncts, which doesn't suit us at the moment!
I was interested to read that there's another uni about to open up there as well. I'll check that out too, see what I can find.
Thanks for the info, Z! YOU ARE A GEM |

Actually what is the story with the American University of Dubai?
We all know how well AUS has been doing.
I remember a small flurry of problems at AUD - on the Job Information Journals - a few years back, and I haven't seen any ads or postings since. Does it still exist? Is it a possibility?
Does anyone know anything about the George Mason University thing? (funny... I took my first course towards my MA there before I got my scholarship and went to Cairo...) Hey Zakiah, I was unable to run down my friend who was there... danged ESL gypsies!! Is it just going to be a language school or does it plan to become a full university?

Hi again,
I've just made contact with AUS... and seem to detect a note of irony in VS's note there...
Better do some more research....
Ta for now,

Just read the posts I could find on AUS and... it seems ok?!? Good reports??? But there's nothing recent???
Hmmm.... anybody out there got any new news on AUS?
From one very curious Rickit |

No problems with AUS ever actually. When it was first opened there was some unhappiness with the housing for singles, but they fixed that.
That said, they will have a new ESL/EFL director this year as their previous well-liked director has decided that he wants to go back to teaching and has moved over the English Department. I don't recall if we have ever had an actual AUS teacher post here... it is rather like HCT in that way.
BTW, I didn't mean any irony there... I just wonder what has happened to the American University of Dubai, which is what you had originally asked about. (too many with the same basic names - AUC, AUB, AUD, AUS, and AUK - none related in any way - all independently run - that is Cairo, Beirut, Dubai, Sharjah, and Kuwait - for the newbies) |

I left the UAE a year ago...AUD has a fancy campus on the outskirts of Dubai (next to the Hard Rock Cafe), but it's apparently an Arab-managed disaster and American in name only, and hires a lot of part-time faculty. Check the instructors' comments in Dave's Job Information Journal. |

Thanks for that, gn2. I'll check that out quick-smart.
Did you enjoy your time in the UAE?

My pleasure, Rickit. Yes I did enjoy the UAE. Spent 5 years in Dubai--at Dubai Women's College--and two years with the Petroleum Institute in Abu Dhabi which, by the way, is the best EFL job in the UAE. Check it out under "Lecturer, English" (or "English Lecutrer," I forget which) in Dave's Job Information Journal. |

Hey Global... why'd you leave PI? They are so tough to get a job with. Of course, you needn't tell us everything. But, a real question here... do they hire women? (since that would cover Ms Rickit...)
Thanks for the info on AUD. I think that posting on the Job Information Journal is a few years old though.

Nice to talk to you, VS...been looking over these threads the past day or so and found some great info...for example, the new George Mason campus opening in RAK in 2006 (it will have an intensive English school, by the way).
As for PI, unfortunately I strongly needed a break from the Middle East after 4 years in Saudi and 7 in the UAE...plus, foolishly, I thought I had enough savings...but I get along well with certian powers that be, and I'm told I have a definite possibility if I want to return in 2006.
Women at the PI: they hire only men at present for the intensive English program. There's a woman PhD in charge of the university-level English courses. NEWS FLASH: you heard it here first, but don't tell 'em you heard it from me: the PI will open up to women students in 2006 AND will open a second campus in some remote place.
Good hunting for anyone applying. But there's nothing available in EFL for 2005 from what I'm told. |

Hi again!
Yes, I saw that lead, too. I looked on the website but as yet haven't found anything out about the positions that might be available there.
Have you been more successful?
The ever inquisitive,

HI again Rickit: Yes--the Economist has just published ad ad for the Dean (director) of the entire branch campus. That means other job ads for staff and faculty will follow later. |

Sorry--I was referring to the George Mason thing. I don't think there's anything on the internet yet about PI's new campus. I know where it will be but I'm not telling...the powers that be told me in confidence (not to drop names or anything...you know) |
