Hello folks
I'm thinking about accepting a joba in Rizhao in shandong province and was wondering if anyone has ever been there? If you've lived there, stayed there or just passed through I'd be grateful for the lowdown on the place. Facilities? Atmos? Foreigners?

I've been there. It's a quaint little seaside town, and a popular vacation destination for Chinese. Like most quaint towns in China it's gray and dirty, but it seemed pleasant enough. The locals seemed really friendly, too. You won't see many foreigners there. I didn't see any when I was there for a week. Lots of beaches filled with potbellied men in speedos and ladies wearing 1950's swimsuits. It's nice in the summer, but mighty cold in the winter. Hope you like seafood! |

If you are used to working in southern China, then yes, you may find Rizhao's winter cold. Not that I have been there, but since it is located southwest of Qingdao, its winter should be milder than Qingdao's (not that I found Qingdao's winter cold).
jencoyle, a Google search would reveal a lot of information about Rizhao.
There is no direct train between Rizhao and Qingdao, but you can catch a long distance coach between the two cities. Rizhao does have direct train service to Beijing and Jinan (Shandong's capital).
It is located on the coast, to the southwest of Qingdao.
From http://images.beijing-2008.org/lib/olympic_sqxlzn/en/shandong.pdf
Area: 5,310 square KM
Population: 2,753,300
One hour ride from Qingdao's airport to Rizhao.

I know Rizhao pretty well. In fact, for the last ten months, I've been working there at Rizhao TV & Radio University. I've just completed my contract.
Rizhao's a nice place to live and work. Your work experience will, of course, depend on the school, but I found the place to be clean (by Chinese standards), green (lots of trees and flowers in the new part of the city near the sea) and possessing some awesome beaches. I had a great time working at Rizhao TV & Radio University. The students, colleagues and accommodation were all great. Even the Foreign Affairs Office is staffed by friendly, extremely helpful people (gasp!)
All in all, it's been a great experience and I'd highly recommend the place and university to anyone. It's truly been a pleasure living and working here. |
