Has anyone who's been wait listed by Westgate ever actually gotten a job with them?
In searching this forum all I was able to find was one instance last year when Team Papua was offered a job only to have it yanked out from under him and another person who was wait listed and never offered a job.
I just received an e-mail saying that they would decide within 3 months whether they will hire me or not. Is this just a polite way of saying "you didn't get the job"? Or is it a way of saying "we'll contact you again in 3 months to go through the hoops again with the application process for a job that starts in another 6 months"? |

Just so you know, Westgate is a dispatch company which ahs various contracts with kindergartens, elementary schools and high schools to provide ALT teachers on a 3 month semester basis. they can only decide how many teachers they need when they know what comes back from the cliient, who will renew, who won't. In this case they can not offer you an opening until they know about what classes are being offered. I think the next school semester starts in mid-September.
Generally it takes about 8 to 12 weeks to arrange a work visa, and they will put the visa paperwork in when they know they have a placement for you. In the meantime they want you to sit by the phone and wait for them to tell you when you can come over. they call the shots here but I consider 3 months to be a long time and they cant really expect you to put your life on hold until then.
I'm not you, but personally i would keep my options open, consider other schools and take whatever comes along. They dont own you, and you are not formally employed with them until you get your visa and are on your way to the airport. Dont let the company dangle a carrot in front of you, which they may yank away at their convenience. Look for other jobs and take theirs if you get no other suitable offers. Westgate is not the only game in town. |

Thanks for the reply Paul. Yeah, I'm definitely not looking at them as the only game in town. Unfortunately for me, I haven't had much time to work on other schools as I've been packing all my belongings for storage and have not had internet access (other than sneaking some in here at work). It's my understanding that most of the schools in Japan will have pretty much finished up their hiring for the fall at this point (Westgate's "3 months" quote seems to imply that they "might" consider me for the spring session starting in January), so I'm considering checking out countries like Taiwan where it's my understanding that one can have pretty good luck with just flying in and begin looking for work while there.
The way I look at it, the world's my oyster. |
