Hi,

I'm planning on attending certification training in late fall. My plan had been to have everything completed by late December so I would be all set to start teaching as of Jan. 1. Now, my schedule might force me to push that back about a month.

I'm wondering how much of a difference it would actually be when looking for a job to be available to start late Jan/early Feb as opposed to Feb 1?

Thanks!

If you want to teach in China, this would be an ideal starting point in the calendar year to teach, because the Spring Festival will be starting on January 29, 2006. For us Westerners, this is known as the "Chinese New Year" and it will be the Year of the Dog.

What happens usually in China is that private language schools usually have seven days off, but most public institutions like government schools and universities can have up to three weeks off. You could certainly look into the possibility of getting a job which starts after the end of the holiday.

I started a job at a government primary school in Wuhan City in China after the end of the Spring Festival last year and stayed a year before starting my job at my current school, again after the end of the Spring Festival. Hence, February is an OK time for starting a teaching job in mainland China.

Kara,
Where are you planning to work? Every country has different requirements, not only from employers but from immigration.

Do you have a degree in anything?

What is your nationality and age?

My nationality is American (USA) and I do have a degree in Information Systems. I'm also currenly applying for my Irish citzenship, but I highly doubt I will have that completed come January.

I'm not really sure where I want to teach, for the most part I'm open for anything, it depends more on the actual specifics of the job opportunity.

Thanks so much for all the feedback! A big help for newbie! Smile
