This question is somewhat job-related. What are some gift suggestions for people who have helped me in my journey to relocate to China?

I specifically ask about gifts for people in Shanghai because I know you can get pretty much everything you would want in Shanghai. I am coming from the US. What are some good, light-weight gift suggestions? I was thinking See's or Ghiradelli chocolates (Bay Area products) but thought that chocolate in my luggage in the 100 degree heat would not be a good mix. Perhaps freezing before packing? And what about gifts for expats from the US now living in Shanghai?

What did others bring for thank you gifts?

Yes, Audchiang, you have a good grasp of the situation. In my opinion, a good gift should represent something about the giver's home. The best example I ever saw was a couple from Massachusetts who disributed small packets of cranberries. Small, edible, and inexpensive.

I wouldn't consider anything perishable. They will more than likely be confiscated at the airport and wouldn't that be a shame.

My suggestion is something small at a duty-free store in the airport that, as previous poster suggested, represents your city.
