|
|
Hi,
I have searched this forum and other internet sites but I can't really work out how much I will need to live on. Can anyone give me some general guidance as to how much I will need to earn to:
1. Scrape by, eat in and not go out much
2. Go out now and then, go to the cinema etc
3. Eat out all the time, take taxis everywhere.
I will be going with my boyfriend so we'll be able to double up on accomodation etc.
Also, how much does it cost to use the internet from home?
Many thanks |

You didn't offer a location. You didn't say whether or not your housing would be provided or you'd have to pay for it. The major cities (Beijing, Shanghai, etc) easily cost twice as much to live on. The cost of taxis can be large...and of course it various with how far you travel and how much you use them.
The number that I've frequently heard on here is 2500 RMB ($300 US or so). I was budgeting more like $500 US for myself because I'll be paying for college tuition, tutors, and I'm not into suffering. ymmv. |

As it says in the subject: Shanghai. Do you mean where exactly in Shanghai would I want to live?
I'm wondering about everything... housing, food, transport etc |

I failed today's reading comprehension test.
I'll let someone who has lived there reply, but I understand it is one of the most expensive places in China. Not a big deal if you are on an expat salary but I can't imagine too many English teachers living there.
On the plus side it is a large city. A few Google searches will provide plenty of information:

Allow me to offer some insight since I recently moved to Shanghai. If you just want to get by it's really not that expensive, because transportation really isn't expensive if you use the buses and metro. Everyday I commute from Nanhui district to the center Shanghai, and I spend about 10 kuai.
As for eating out it's not as scary as people make it sound as long as you don't mind the local food. In fact I've found the local Chinese restaurant prices comparable to those in the province I was in before, Shanxi.
If you don't go out much, never use taxis, have your housing paid for, and don't eat Western food all the time, I'd say you could easily get by on 3 or 4K RMB a month.
If you go out dancing, karaoke, bars all the time be prepared to spend a LOT more. If you did this all the time you could easily spend 10 or 15K RMB a month I'd say. That's probably a conservative estimate.
Hope this helps...
