Hi all. I've been reading these forums for awhile. Seems like mostly everyone comes from a country of "Native Speakers" of english.
I'm 27, Chinese female and Singaporean by nationality. I have a BA in English language but no teaching experience.
I tried writing in to Korea recruiters but got some pretty shitty/dodgy offers. I wrote to the Korean embassy (in Singapore) and found out that Singapore is not recognised as a country of "Native English" and therefore a work visa for teaching would not be granted.
What's the situation in Taiwan? Is there anyone here NOT from USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand etc and Asian?

There may well be, but they won't be in possession of a legitimate work permit for teaching. Taiwan operates the same way Korea does in this regard.
I have had a permit for being a researcher, even tho it was an ESL related job. Not sure if the "native-speaker" country rules applied there. Maybe someone else (Brian? TS?) knows.
I do know that you could get a job, if a work permit wasn't required. For example, if you just accepted that visa runs were just part of the cost of doing business, then you could work here and earn a very comfortable living. And you'd get to visit Bangkok/HK/Manila/Okiniwa or even Singapore every couple of months. Cool, huh?

Hi,
There are increasing numbers of Russian people. The ones I knew while being charming people were obviously not native speakers but seemed to be getting away with it as it were. Also, the school system does teach english grammar through the medium of chinese teachers and we tend to be there for accent and practice with a native which does have a premium.
Last place worked was staffed by a couple of BBC's so I guess their situation would have been pretty similar to yours and they were doing fine.
BTW I dont regard Canadians and Americans as native speakers of English at all, language manglers the lot of 'em!!!! |

If you look Chinese you may be able to get a job teaching in kindergartens as the occupational Chinese government on Taiwan banned all people not of the Chinese race from teaching in kindergartens.
