Hey, I don't care if this was posted for a school (not eikaiwa) in Okinawa that IS run by mothers and not the government. The salary is totally ridiculous for the duties and qualifications. I've deleted the contact information, but you can find this on OhayoSensei. Outrageous!!
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHER (FIRST GRADE).
Full-time, 35 hours/week, 27 class hours/week.
160,000yen/month. Teach first graders: homeroom (average 12
students); teach English, Social Studies, Math, Science, P.E., Art
and Music; four hours for making lesson plans (school has its own
curriculums, however, basically following DODD School). "As the
school is run by mothers, no support from Japanese Government, the
salary is low. However, you can have a great opportunity to work with
international children in Okinawa." Proper visa, BA/BS (regular
subjects for Elementary Grade Class Teachers), teaching certification
and three years teaching experience in the US required. MA, TESL/ESL
certification, and instructor with drivers license and car preferred.
APPLICANT MUST CURRENTLY RESIDE IN JAPAN. One-year renewable
contract. Application deadline August 15, 2005. Position begins
September, 2005. |

I saw that awhile back when I was looking for jobs for certified teachers, BUT they have to be joking. The person would be living on a shoestring. Those mothers need to raise the tuition or have some fundraisers or something so they can pay a fair wage. BUT I'm not sure I would want mothers for my bosses even if they were paying a fortune. |

Where do I sign up? My shoes could use a fair bit of new string.

If they're anything like Korean mothers, then I would be surprised if ANYONE applies.

Almost certainly they're trying to tap into the "bored military spouse" market for whom 160,000 yen a month would be plenty. |

True, David, but yet another example of ways that the teaching market is allowed to slide downhill instead of getting qualified teachers. |

But how many of these bored military wives have the qualifications they want?

Okinawa has been like that for years though. When I was there places where paying less than 1000 yen an hour. |

You'd be surprised. Lots of bored Americans on Okinawa. |

Unsurprisingly, that ad has been up for quite a while now.
I saw another that was 6 days a week for 200,000/month. Yikes. Might as well stay home and work at In-n-Out Burger ($9/hr to start). |

Indeed, a Private First Class in the US Army now makes about the same: $17,400. But with free housing, food and medical services. And a $5000 signing bonus. Sure, you might have to do a couple of tours in Iraq. But you know what I mean. |

Lamentable, but salaries are coming down all over the show in Japan.
Japanese employers may want to reduce costs, but the old saying goes, if you pay peanuts, you'll get monkeys. |

I just have to vent. This is insane! I saw this ad posted on OhayoSensei today and just about blew my gasket. I almost sent an email to them...but restrained myself. My God, how insulting. |
