Can anybody tell about Sri Lanka? How is the pay? How is your work schedule? Are there jobs outside of Colombo(i.e. Kandy, Galle)etc etc.... I have looked everywhere but am not finding much in the way of good info.
Thanks,

Sri Lanka is a great country to live in, but EFL jobs are few and far between, unless you are prepared to work for ridiculously low money.
If you are well qualified the British Council has a branch in Kandy. The American University of Colombo pays a good salary, but I doubt if it needs EFL teachers.
There are some so-called international schools, if you have K-12 qualifications but few pay more than $300-$400 a month. The Canadian School at Negombo, and the British School in Colombo advertise in the TES on occasion.
Bear in mind that a University Professor's salary in Sri Lanka is under $300 a month, and also that a significant proportion of the middle class are educated in English-medium schools. so there is not the demand for EFL there is in non-English-speaking countries such as Japan, Korea or Thailand.
Also the country is awash with Western do-gooders, both the wash-a-leper brigade, and the swan-around-in-Land-Cruisers-lunch-at-the-Sheraton crowd. |
