HI,
I need a job in Tokyo. I"m Canadian. I have taught for NOVA and have a TEFL certificate and I can speak Japanese pretty well since I majored in Japanese studies at U of T. Anyway, I need a job. I will Arrive in Tokyo Aug. 10 on a tourist visa. I am willing to hostess or babysit.... anything. Can anyone help me out? How does one get a job hostessing? Where should I look? Is it possible for me to get a job teaching? HELP!!!

You taught for NOVA. What was your visa status then? Do you have a degree? How old are you now? Can't answer much about teaching jobs until we know these things.

Not to question your motives, but just what is it that brings you to Tokyo in 2 days without anything lined up or any plan in mind?

You can't work on a tourist status.

I have a degree, 24 years old, female, worked for NOVA on a working holiday visa 2 years ago.
Due to many circumstances I left Japan and am now returning for a vacation. If I get a job there that would be a dream come true. Later I can apply for a work visa. I have a place to stay. Hope to get a job in the first month that I"m there. A short term job is ok. Any job is ok. I read that list of things a person should be in order to get a job in Japan while in Japan and yes I do meet about 95% of the criteria including being genki all the time. lol.
By the way, my Japanese is not bad.... I hope that will help.

I would appreciate any help anyone could give.

Hi,

can't really help you with the jobs except the usual channels such as the Japan times on Mondays and http://www.ohayosensei.com.

For non-teaching jobs you may want to consider what the locals do and look through the job postings in Hello Work which is the job agency for Japanese people looking for work. You would need to be able to read and speak Japanese.

I might also point out that immigration is now cracking down on people doing jobs outside their visa status. You will not be able to teach English and work as a hostess as the same time, as you will be in violation of your visa status and risk a fine and/or deportation if you are caught.

For general jobs (and some teaching jobs), look at www.jobsinjapan.com

This is a pretty slow time to be looking for teaching work, and next week is Obon holiday. Good luck.

Be very careful about doing any hostess work, no matter how good your Japanese is.

Thanks so much for your help. Thanks to you, I feel much better. Maybe I am very Naive, but I could you tell me the dangers in hostessing. It seems like a good and easy way to get money cause it's just flirting, right? I will try to get a good job, that is very safe. Thanks so much everyone.
