While I worked at Lingo School in Takamatsu, I had a colleague who was sent to a kindergarten down the street from the school every Thursday.
I noticed at one point that she always removed her jewellery before going to this assignment. When I asked her about this she answered that she had to take off every piece of jewelry to keep the children from hurting themselves when they climbed on her. I asked how she could teach with children climbing all over her. She answered she did not teach; she joined the students in the park next to the school so the children could be exposed to a foreigner at recess. This highly qualified and experienced elementary school professional was like a pony brought to a petting zoo to amuse the children. Only in reputable petting zoos children are seldom allowed to climb on the animals. This teacher left Lingo School after 10 months. Lingo School was fully supported by the Japanese Ministry of Education.
The shabby treatment imposed on foreign teachers at Lingo School was also endorsed by the Managers of Adventure School in Munakata, member of JALT. |

Thats terrible! I am glad she left! This is exactly why we need a union. |

JALT is not a teachers union and does not pretend to be one. Its simply a professional teachers organisation where teachers can network and share ideas. It has no power to act on behalf of employees against employers.
Being a JALT member does not mean that one endorses or supports any particular behavior and I'm not sure what this has to do with what happens at Lingo school. JALT has steadfastly resisted any action that would smack of becoming a labor union and trying to protect teachers jobs. |
