I have searched the boards but cannot find an answer to this. i am sure it is here somewhere, but I just can't find it. I have accepted a positon with a chain school (I know there are pros and cons) and am in the process of searching for airfare. I need to purchase it soon. Do I purchase one way or round trip? How do I deal with the return flight if I do round trip? What did you all do? Please, I need help.
Thank you! |

As far as I know... a round trip or "ongoing" ticket is required for a visa.
I would think scheduling the round trip return ticket for the end of your contract is good, or for 2 weeks after you arrive, in case things don't pan out. If things DO work (and I hope they do), you can re-schedule the return trip for a fee. |

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. You can't schedule a return for a year later. Airlines just don't seem to do that. That is the one issue I am dealing with. Any more ideas? Who has actually had to deal with this? |

Many of the major airline have a open return policy. You don't have to chose a specific date at the time of purchase. Ask your airline if they offer this option. The open return tickets are generally good for one year. |

I bought my round-trip ticket with STA Travel (in Canada), got an extremely great deal, have a return date for 2 months from return date (for VISA reasons), and can change that date to anytime within 363 days for a $40 CDN fee.
Great deal and you have that getaway ticket if need be.
Hope things work out.

Thank you all. Do any of you know know if a round trip is needed? Could I just have an onward ticket: from the US to Taiwan and then Taiwan to Singapore? |

Yes, you can do this. The point is that the government want to see that you are able to finance your way out of the country. Your leaving ticket doesn't have to be a point of origin return, just a ticket to any other country.

Thank you all again....this site is amazing. The onward ticket may be the best way for me $ wise. Thanks for the help. |

Different visa's have different requirements.
Get a Multiple Entry Visa through your travel agent. To get the visa you must have the required ticket, your travel agent should take care of everything.
Do not tell the travel agent or the visa office that you are going to teach. Claim that you are a business oriented tourist and specifically request a Multiple Entry Visa, it will make your life much easier once you get here.
Good luck!

The visa you need is a 60 day visitor's visa. At this stage I don't think it is important whether it is single or multiple entry because you change it to multiple entry when you apply for your ARC in Taiwan.
60 days is important because it allows you enough time to do all the paperwork necessary to apply for the ARC. A 30 day visitor's visa is not long enough and nor is a landing visa.

Why would you want to go to all that trouble?
My advice is follow the majority and come on a 60 day visitors visa for the purposes of tourism. |

Thanks all. It was not the visa I was worried about. I was more concerned about how to handle the airfare for the visa/customs. By going for a one way into Taiwan and a one way onward ticket (Singapore or elsewhere) it would save me over $300 USD which is considerable since the start up $ for this is a bit rough. |
