|

hey
so I keep hearing this songstress in restaurants, net cafes!
I'd kind of like to know who she is, and maybe get her CD.
She seems to have 2 huge huge songs right at the moment any ideas? (pop )
...speaking of music, if you want to throw in some cool artists from this nation, please... that would be great! |

I think you might have to narrow it down just a wee bit. But maybe this list of the music charts in Japan might help:

Well I can tell you the ones to ignore:
SMAP
L'Arc en Ciel
Southern All Stars.
Chemistry,
Could be Otsuka Ai. She seems to be all over the place. |

If we're ruling out the guys, add these to the list:
Glay, Bump of Chicken, Mr. Children, Orange Range, and a bunch more whose kanji I don't feel like squinting as I'm on my way out of the house.
Do as Infinity has female singers but it's probably not them.
You could look for Otsuka Ai on filesharing (disclaimer: to sample it before you buy it, naturally) or, if you use livejournal.com, join the community named jpop_mp3s and either look or ask there. Or see if you can figure out the romaji for a distinctive line of lyrics and google it--you would be surprised how fast foreign fans get romanized lyrics online. That's how I figured out Hirahara Ayaka's "Jupiter" and Nakashima Mika's "Yuki no Hana," which got seriously stuck in my head during our visit over New Year's 2003-2004.
Or point to the speakers and ask who it is. |

Just avoid J-Pop as much as possible, it'll crush your soul. |

What did it sound like? Pop? R&B? Fast? Slow? Please describe how the music sound like so we can narrow down the genre.
And what did the singer sound like? High voice? Husky voice? Soothing voice or sounds like she can't sing at all?
Any other phrases you caught? You've heard the song like a lot of times, so any catchy phrases you caught (or what it sounds like to you)?
Except for AI, I don't like to listen to any of the female singers here. She's probably the only one who can sing (for R&B & hip-hop, not other genre). |

wow all good advice ... I'll check out those others you like too.. (Hirahara Ayaka.. and so on)
as to this singer, she sounds good to me
I've got other music in my ear right now, so I can't think of her's ..wait a sec!............. I guess it's pretty much pop. not slow, not fast either .
Listened to NHK radio late last night: Music Square Top 20 countdown, Sunday Night. #7 was the slow ballad that I like. It's not the song I really want to know.. it's the second one I guess. I dunno. sounds like the same singer maybe..maybe! |

Wow, good job PaulH!
And yeah, Nakashima Mika and Hirahara Ayaka have better voices than average for j-pop singers. I also recommend Natsukawa Rimi (also plays traditional instruments) as far as female singers go. I also like Ueto Aya and ZONE, but I wouldn't really call them high-quality musical artists ... |

ha! You might need to work on romanization before we can look that up!
Tried pointing at the sound system and saying "Dare desu ka?" (da-reh des ka) |

This is really a shot in the dark here but could it possibly be Crystal Kay, 恋におちたら (aini ochitara)?
Reasons for saying it might be:
1. It has been played everywhere for the last couple of months although it's not in the top 40 anymore.
2. Female singer, typical J-pop, song is not particularly fast but not a ballad either.
3. It has the words/ syllables "michi", "eba", "hi" in it.
Reasons for this probably not being the song you're after:
1. The chances of "michi", "eba", etc being a lyrical part of any random J-Pop song are pretty high.
2. The chorus of this song is pretty distinctive. It goes "kokoro kara, kokoro kara..." so you would probably have picked up on that.
Good luck in finding it. You're a braver gal than I (an extended version of most J-pop songs is my idea of a nightmare). |

The hits in Japan are horrid because everyone likes to sing karaoke, and if the song is too hard for the average joe and mary to sing it goes down on the charts, so most JPop is rancid.
Some of the talent includes:
Love Psychedelico
Mr. Children
Misia
Bonobos
JHipHop is horrid, and it takes no talent because they have 5 vowels and 'n' to rhyme with! You have to try hard to not rap in Japanese. |
