Well if you plan to get married, get a new passport, or have a kid.....bring it (I got mine sent over) if not yes a copy will most likely suffice.

2. Will I be able to buy Benylin (Original) cough medicine in Bangkok? |
Don't know!

3. Will I find Nurofen Plus in Bangkok? |
Again don't know. But with both of these I'd have thought if you can't get them you'd be able to get a generic copy?

4. 75,000 medical insurance cover - is it enough? |
Should be mate Cheaper this end (a lot).

5. Does anyone actually carry their passport with them when they go out? |
You're supposed to and a lot of people do, although a copy will generally suffice (not always though if the old Bill are being moody).

6. Will I be able to buy a decent, good value laptop in Bangkok? |
Yeah although it might be a lickle bit cheaper in the UK for the hardware, you'll for sure save any difference with the software.

7. Socialising with your (18+) students - is it acceptable? |
Yeah I think so, although it depends what you class as 'socialising'

8. Do you own an umbrella? |
Yes, but I always seem to leave it at home or work when I need it!

9. Do you wai your students? |
S'pose it depends on the age, social standing etc. but I think a 'low' wai is acceptable.

You guys crack me up.
re: drugs
I dropped by my local drug store this afternoon,
which just happens to be located right across from
the famous 5 Star Bar & Grill, and here's what I found:
"Nurofen 400" - 1 pack of 6 tablets - 20 Baht
Nurofen Plus - out of stock at the moment
"Benadryl Cough Syrup" - 1 bottle of 60 ml - 35 Baht
Benylin - They don't carry that one.
Based on visiting that one drug store,
I'd say you'll find what you're looking for ...
or, as kenkannif suggests, something very similar.
re: passport
I used to carry mine around with me all the time.
Now, I just carry a good photocopy of it.
I've been here almost 2 years now,
and nobody has ever asked to see it.
re: the wai
I wai everybody!
Depending on the student's age, you'll soon learn how to
wai in the correct way. i.e., when you wai an older person,
the tips of your fingers touch your forehead,
whereas when you wai someone much younger than you,
your finger tips are just under your chin.
Same age? Your fingers are just about touching your nose, etc ...
In plain English, the higher your hands,
the more respect you convey with your wai.
re: socialising with students
Some schools encourage social activities between teacher and student
and then there are some schools that strictly prohibit it.
And some schools have no clear policy at all,
and make decisions on a case-by-case basis.
When in doubt, ask your DOS before making a date.
re: birth cert
I have mine with me, but haven't needed it yet. If you're planning
to stay abroad over the long-term, I'd bring the original.
re: laptops
You'll find brand new laptops from 30,000 ~ 50,000 Baht, depending on the goodies & processor speed.
Figure on spending US$750 to $1,000 for something decent. The cheapest deal I've found so far
is a brand new model 'NEC' with a Celeron chip @ 29,900 Baht.

Fantastic - replies from the two Thailand experts. I think I can declare this thread closed.
Thanks, you guys.
There's no turning back now. I'll be in BKK from late September but may not dare venture out much while I'm under the CELTA cosh. But I could be persuaded...

^ With all this talk about God and Angels, I'm starting
to wonder if you guys have put out a contract on me?
All joking aside; we do have a really nice bunch of
experienced and helpful posters on the Thai Forum, and
I've learned quite a lot from everybody's individual contributions.
I think it's safe to say that all of us enjoy sharing what we know
and giving back a little ... |
