Hello again
I have been offered a position as an Oral English Teacher at The Twenty-first Foreign Language School of Jiaxing, RMB 4300, 20 sessions a week, usual terms (accommodation, airfare etc.)
Firstly, does anybody know of this school?
Secondly, does anybody know of Jiaxing in Zhejiang province ?
And last, but not least, does that money - for - hours seem fair / good ? |

Yes, it's midway between Shanghai and Hangzhou. Jiaxing is more of a medium-sized city, but there's still an abundance of things to do, especially places to eat. Streets are quite wide, and the lighting is nice at night. I found it to be a relaxed town, as well.

Doesn't sound terribly high, but if the school pays for accomodation and meals, it's a better deal. You'd can make more money in the big cities, but Jiaxing may be a more laid-back experience.

thanks for your reply steve, i appreciate it
that was the impression i had gotten from reading about Jiaxing.
also handy that shanghai is nearby.
food and accommodation are included in the terms so i think i have done okay
actually spoke to the principal on the phone and he seemed like a decent enough bloke (as he does through his emails)
hopefully the reality will match the virtuality !
any tips on Jiaxing from your experiences (places to go, things to see, places / things to avoid) ? |

This is a good sign, however I would encourage you to arrive in China and meet him before signing any contract. If that's not possible now don't worry about it, but consider for future reference. It's an employees' market out here, and there's no rush to sign any deals. I made a few mistakes in my overseas experience last year by rushing into stuff too quickly. One deal was signing an apartment lease with an overprotective landlord. I recognized this immediately, but felt there weren't any better options.
Given the sheer vastness of this market and the opportunities for teaching here in China, especially with a degree and experience, it makes good sense to evaluate a handful of offers and play one off against the other.
That said, you got a pretty good deal already, but don't be shy about negotiating a few terms on the contract before you sign it (if you haven't already). If the principal is Chinese, he would likely hold you in high regard for this, as negotiating and bargaining are key elements of their culture, like a form of social discourse.

I wish I could tell you more, as I was only in Jiaxing for a few days during a bike trip awhile back. But I do remember a place called 'Nan Hu' or 'South Lake' that was pretty good. The number of KTV places there is mind-boggling, and nightlife in general is pretty good. I forget the name of the main street, but it has lots of eatieries and great food. Try to avoid living anywhere close to the railway line, as the train sirens are loud. Speaking of trains, you can enjoy making regular trips to Shanghai and Hangzhou as you're lucky to have easy access to both cities.

Hi,
wanted to second the endorsement of Jiaxing.
You could do worse. It's a small town but quite near to a lot of interesting places such as Hangzhou, Shanghai, Suzhou, etc.
IMHO this "Greater Shanghai" area (Shanghai, southern Jiangsu province, northern Zhejiang province) is THE place to be in China right now.
On the surface the job doesn't sound too bad. Can they get you a Z Visa?

its reassuring to know i am not being too blinkered about the delights of the area - from what i have read it seems nice enough
to answer you both
i will be getting a z visa
and i wont be signing a contract until we meet
starting to get excited now ! |
