Wear a suit. It doesn't have to be top of the line, but if you want a notch up on others who come wearing only a sports jacket and chinos, wear a suit.

All out wearing a suit ? Shouldn't this be standard practice when applying for any teaching job (unless directed otherwise) ?

Not sure if you guys in the US have seen the latest business craze over here but japanese businessmens idea of dressing down is not wearing a necktie. Men here feel naked without a tie.

It may be the height of office fashion to wear Lands End polos shirts or Mills Brothers or dress as though you work for Microsoft, but this is Japan. The saying here is "go in ireba, go ni sh-itagai" meaning in Rome do as the Romans do.

When you teach kids you can get away with wearing jeans or a track suit top but if you want to get hired you have to dress the part first.

looks like i'll be purchasing a suit (with pants) b/w now and wednesday....and i need some shoes too...bummer...

i don't really like wearing polo shirts for some reason...and even though i don't wear a tie often...i, too, would feel kinda naked without one if i was wearing everything else in the ensemble....

so one other thing...when i wear the suit, would it be ok to take off my jacket once in a while?

If the room where the interview is to be held is warm, facilities will be provided for hanging your jacket.

Yes, I agree with everyone else here, suit suit suit.

I know it's a drag to buy expensive clothes for a job you may not get, but hey, a suit's a good thing to have, regardless. Plus, if you get the job, you're going to need at least three suits for work. Don't fret. If I, who just learned how to tie a necktie a month ago can pull it off, you most definitely can.

So you are willing to buy a suit but not willing to wear it all the time at the most important time (an interview)??? I think you can answer your own question.

As for rooms that are too hot, consider this. Japanese people wear long sleeves and suits all through winter despite the heat.

Shouldn't that be summer, not winter? I believe the current cool biz campaign is because japanese people wear jackets and ties becuase the airconditioning is turned up high in a 38 degree heat. Koizumi wants people to save energy by turning down the airconditioning and doing away with jackets. Anyway, go in to many city offices and you will see people in shirtsleeves. Its usually only high school classrooms that dont have airconditioning.

Hi silent-noise,

Wouldn't want to splash out money for a suit when you may not get the job, granted it is good to have but there are other ways.

1) Go to a department store with a good return policy, buy a suit but don't remove the tags. Tuck them in for the interview and when you are done return it.

2) There are plenty of second-hand shops around and you are sure to find something you can wear without having to spend an arm and a leg.

Good luck to you and let us know how it goes.

hmmm...i think i'll just bite the bullet and actually buy (and not return) a suit...because,yeah...i'll probably need it later on as well....and given the time i have b/w now adn the interview, i probably won't have time to shop around looking for bargains...oh well, dept store it is!

Sounds like you are bank, why don't you just open your own school and hire someone?

Anyway for what it's worth, and it sounds like you may not care but if you buy a black suit you can use it for weddings and funerals here.
