|
|
Hi all,
Due to my financial situation I am not able to arrive in Taichung until late January or early February. I see so many advertisements for teachers now, at the beginning of the school year, but is there a high demand for positions after the Chinese New Year when I plan to arrive? What about housing availability as well? If I arrive during Chinese New Year will I be able to accomplish much as this is the major holiday/vacation time for the country?
Thanks for the help!! |

Hey TK,
TaiChung will be a ghost town as will all businesses during CNY. Arriving a week or 2 before CNY is prolly the best time to come. Get a look around, do a few interviews, get your accoms set up and start your job as soon as the throngs return. Ideal situation really.
Nothing, but nothing gets done during CNY. The entire island drives out to the highway and parks. For 4 days.

Pop Fly is right on the money.
The Lunar New Year on Taiwan is one of the times when business is put aside and culture dominates all things Taiwanese.
Airplane tickets also double at that time of year so you may want to take another look at the day you choose.

Thanks for the info guys. I guess I might have to revise my arrival time somewhat; I really did want to be there for CNY. I guess my real concern is job availability at that time?? If many teachers are signing year contracts now; is there a need for teachers in Jan/Feb? I realize there maybe some turn over rate; however will the competition for these jobs be higher at that time?
Pop Fly interesting icon you have there |

methinks there is no reason why you shouldn't arrive a few days before Chinese New Year, set up your arrangements (which can be done online), enjoy the festival and start working afterwards. Most schools close for around two weeks, but you can easily find a few private students for intensive lessons during the winter break. Also, many foreigners complete their contracts at this time and several positions are available until mid-February: then the drought begins.
As other members have warned, though, except for the rowdy markets and the clacking of MahJiang tiles, you may find the festival somewhat removed from your expectations. Again, local knowledge would be a great benefit, and you may find local families who would be thrilled to let you in on the culture. A cultural/language exchange may even be an option.
You have time: use it well. And best of luck. |
