can anybody tell me what is the best (as in high and professional standards; not best price, hehe) hospital in Istanbul? Are there any American doctors working at the American Hospital?

Ok, I take the hint. I will update it soon..
I recommend Kadikoy sifa Hastanesi. However more important than the hospital is the doctor.
It has also got wicked views from the canteen.

there aren't any American drs that I have seen at the American Hospital, but a lot of them trained in the US and they all speak some amount of English.

The German Hospital is very good and I will probably switch to it, since it is a little closer to my house.

Health insurance is a VERY good idea here.

I heard recently that there is a John Hopkins hospital in Gebze. It is the most modern hospital with all the doctors having been trained in the US.

The Deutsche Krankenhaus (not crackhouse) is fairly good, there are many English speaking doctors there.
I hear the crackhouse isn't up to much, but they do speak English.

Medical care has changed alot since I first got here. Now there are 100s of privet hosiptals and you really can get good treatment.

The problem is cost. To go for a simple check up in Academic, Acibadem or Şifa on the Asian side will cost you between 100-150 Y.T.L. A friend broke his arm and it cost over 600 Y.T.L to have it set at Sifa.

If you don't have Insurance then you have to look at using one of the many smaller privet hospitals around the city, there o.k for simple things and a lot cheaper.

The best thing you can do is buy privet insurance. My school covers my insurance and I also get covered by my wife's company. (Yapı Kredı Sıgorta) Most good schools will include privet health cover. It cost around 800 to 1200 T.Y.L per year depending on your age and what you want.

I went to American Hospital for a routine checkup-- while the doctor was thorough and seemed knowledgeable, with excellent English, he also seemed to be overly keen to use every little piece of amazing elctronic equipment the had there, including the little machine that goes 'ping.' One of my tests came out with a not-too-worrying abnormality that he immediately wanted to examine further with a fiber optic microscope exam which would cost 600-800 YTL, whereas most doctors would take a wait-and-see approach.

On the other hand, I still have a lot more faith in that guy than I do in most Turkish doctors. The last one I went to put me on 1000 milligrams/day of multi spectrum antibiotics for the wrong infection, gave me a cream for a different wrong infection, and I still have the infection. Fun.
