Hi there, firstly thanks for all the info I gleaned over the last few months. Unfortunately not much seems to have rubbed off as Im here now and a bit nervous how to get kick started looking for work. Anyway, would you think I am obliged to get a mobile phone before so I have a no to put on my cv or could I just go from door to door and try to arrange interviews by calling directly. On the phone front any advice is greatly appreciated as I was one of the last people in Europe not to have a mobile I have{nt a clue about what I should be asking for or hoping to pay. Also one last thing, and this I guess is the reason Im here, a few years ago I bought a flat in San Telmo its been rented out but now is free so Ive moved in, but its unfurnished and Ill have to pay around 350 pesos a month for expenses luz etc, also its too big really thought the area is super handy. The lady who has looked after this thinks I may be better renting it out again for 1000 pesos its a 3bedroom flat and then renting a smaller place myself. Though from what I see here prices for foreigners are high any advice is great as im here on my ownio and could do with some second opionions thanks |

hmmm... to give advice ethically in the midst of a conflict of interest... i'll do my best
as far as a phone, get one. things change all the time while you're out and about and it's good to know before you get somewhere that class is canceled or the location has been changed. additionally, some institutes call throughout the day as opportunities for jobs arise, but if they can't reach you, they go to the next teacher on the list.
getting a cell phone isn't too bad, there's some info on the SIM card thread as to where. you can get a decent new phone for ~$150 (pesos) and that includes $50 of talk time. as a foreigner, i think you have to go the pre-paid route where you buy phone cards, send the id # via your phone, and get more minutes. it takes a little getting used to, but it's not too complicated. for cti, you dial *555 to know how much $ you have left and *444 to recharge. these calls are free.
as far as the apartment goes, you may find that there are MANY foreigners on this forum and simply out and about in bsas looking for a decently priced apartment to rent. so you could rent your place out and look for a cheaper place, which is probably possible but can be a very difficult and discouraging search. another option is to live there but look for a roommate (foreign or argentine) to share the expenses. i doubt you'd have much trouble finding someone. or you could stay there until you find something cheaper... etc. etc. you have a lot of options, it's really up to what you prefer.
good luck with everything! |

Hi there
I would agree with all that amy has said!
By the way if you do decide to stay in your flat and are looking for some flatmates I`m looking for a room here aswell. I`ve been living here a month and now have rgular work but I`m living in a hostel. I am in dire need of somewhere to live but I have to say that I cannot afford the 'gringo' prices that are on offer around town at the moment.
If your interested send me a pm!!
Thanks and bye for now
