Dear All,

I have been offered a position with the Ministry of Education and the college is located in Sohar.

I haven't a clue about this place and of what I have read on this site so far,Oman is a boring place where you have to entertain yourself. Is this true???

Can anyone advise me on this and whether I should even bother going there because I might find it too different from where I was born (London).

Also, which other city is better to go to other than Muscat?(In terms of entertainment and living standard).

Any advise will be appreciated!! Laughing

It depends on what you are looking for. If you think the life in London is perfect and Dubai sounds appealing, then Oman is probably not for you. Sohar is a pretty good sized town for Oman, and it is close to the border to the UAE. But, if you are looking for a swinging bar scene, lots of boozy parties, movie theaters, plays and opera, and glitzy shopping malls, then Oman is not for you.

I don't know your definition of what is a 'city' (or town or village). I consider Sohar a large village/small town. Only Muscat would be a 'city' in my book. That said, Sohar is totally modern. They don't live in hovels on the beach. Laughing It is an attractive place to visit, but I wouldn't care to live there myself - too small. Muscat is perfect for me.

With the Ministry jobs, they put you where they need you - which may or may not be where you want to go. Direct Ministry hires are usually OK... avoid agency hires though.

Hi VS

Thanks for your advise! You mentioned that I should avoid agency hires but there is an agency however, the interview was conducted by the Ministry themselves. I hope that is a good sign?

Anyway VS what I meant by a city was not bars and discos but some place that doesn't resemble a desert!!! I am not the clubbing pubbing type of person but I don't want to be in a place that is far from no where and nothing to do,die of boredom sort of thing...I know I wouldn't last!!!

It's really hard searching for places on the net and there isn't much on Sohar anyway. I am thinking hard about it though and if I feel that maybe there really isn't much to do there then maybe I will refuse the offer.

Thanks anyway! Wink

Sohar is in a convenient location to reach either Muscat or Dubai by road - the highways are quite good and it's probably only a 2-3 hour journey if you want to make weekend trips. It's also conveniently located to Abu Dhabi,Al Ain and Fujairah (nice beach resorts just to the north of Fujairah).
If you don't get a car, then Sohar is on the major bus route between Muscat and Dubai.
Oman is an interesting country - nice people and great places to visit.

The problem is that we have no way of knowing how an individual defines 'nothing to do.' Laughing What one person considers fun and exciting, the next person may consider deathly boring.

I would define Sohar as boring (to me) but you as long as you have a car, one can easily run to Muscat or the Emirates on weekends.

As to agency vs Ministry hires... the key is who is on the contract as your employer. Agencies have very bad reputations in Oman. You don't 'the agency' to be your employer... if they just find you, and you are employed by the Ministry, that should be OK.

Hi,

I've been posted to Sohar and I can tell you it is a great place to teach. The admin people at the College are excellent.

So far, no complaints about Sohar. Only complaint is that last year the rent was cheaper, but this year the rent has doubled because of the construction of the new port and plants due to a large influx of foreign workers.
