|

Hey this is an odd one but maybe somebody can help...I will be going to Hangzhou area in afew days. I do not have an invitation letter. I had my passport stolen and can only get a 1-year issue.(because I dont have any other ID.) Will this kill my chance of getting a z visa...After all when the paperwork goes in it will be only good for 11 months. I am afraid this will scare off the authorities. Perhaps a 6 month is possible...I have told the college and I guess it is up to them...Wierd situation but was thinking 1 of you had a similar issue - perhaps at renewal time. Thanks... |

Supposedly, in theory, the visa they give you can not be for longer than 6 months before your passport expiration date. So, for example, if your passport expired on December 31st, the visa you get must not last for longer than June 31st.
Whether in practice they will do this or not you will soon find out. |

What is called 'one-year' visa may in fact be a 10 month visa - depending on the dates of commencement and ending of your contracted work. In other words: If your contract begins in March, 2003, your visa will perhaps expire in mid-January because in mid-January the Spring festival will start, which is like a cut-off date, after which they hire again (they would have to hire someone for the entire period from mid-February through mid-June in a public school!).
Holiday seasons like spring festival and summer recess often are not covered by work visas |

I checked with the local Public Security Bureau. Your "Z" visa will run from the time you submit all the paperwork to either 30 days after the contract period stated in your contract or 1 year -- whichever is shorter.
Further, any visa they give you *must* expire no later than 6 months prior to your passport expiration date. I'm not sure where you are, but they say that in Guangzhou there are *no* exceptions to the above stated policy. |

In fact, there is no "one-year" visa. The visa length is the visa length and thus the name. Visas are generally issued with a 6-month entry date. You usually have six months to enter the county, to utilize the visa, and it is usually single entry. That was and still is the purpose of resident permits - to actually LIVE in China once you enter with a visa. |
