I overheard two EFL's chatting loudly about how easily they can get pot and E or 1 1 at pubs in Taipei on a bus this afternoon. Iit's really bad for the passangers ears on the same bus. For some unknown reasons, I've found some foreigners in Taiwan like to talk real loud like there's noone understands English, and very often they'll mention about sex, drugs and whatever in public. I do respect the freedom of speech even though this isn't America, but blaguing about how often they smoke pot or take E before they get to teach "The retarted kids" so they won't get too pissed on a bus! Who's really retarted?

I couldn't agree more.
The number of drug abusers and drug addict teachers coming to Taiwan has increased, as the standard of living decreses and we reach new lows in nearly all sectors on Taiwan.
Many schools (HESS) now require a record of No Criminal History from new teachers' countries of origin as part of the application process.
I think one of the few positive things to come out of the recent arrest of the English teaching, drug dealers in Keelung is that this policy be adopted by the occupational authority on Taiwan as a prerequisite for an ARC.
Drug abuse on Taiwan is rampant. Not just with teachers but students and many civil servants as well.
There was a program a few years back when the DPP first came to power to start randomly testing police officers on duty for drugs and alcohol in their system but was abandoned for fear of having to lay off large numbers of police officers on Taiwan.
Again an incompetent occupational government is incapable of governing a real nation. The best they can do is maintain the status quo and hope to fill there pockets before "the end" of the ROC.
Welcome to Taiwan!

I'm embarrassed when I see people like that.
They shouldn't be allowed into the country.
There are some local people who understand what they're talking about.
I ran into a Canadian guy - no degree - who was arrested and charged for running a grow up with a friend back in Vancouver.
He's here now, teaching illegally, working with children and up on criminal charges.
I guess he was able to get his lawyer to push back the case for another year so he could go and teach EFL overseas.
TECO even gave him 3 year mulitple entry vistitor visa!
It's amazing, isn't it.

i know smoking pot in some countries is legal but we must obey the law in the country which we're living. i saw an EFL on a bus a week ago, he showed the driver a hundred nt dollar note to indict that he doesn't have change, and that was not the first time i saw him doing that. people like him make me angry. just like people talking how easily they can scout taiwanese girls or get taiwanese "friends" to get them free drinks at pubs. what happen to their manners?[/b] |

I dont think its a purely westerner problem - Ive been invited by locals to dinner and a party and on both occasions drugs were being pulled out indiscriminately and out of paranoia i had to leave...
You cant blame westerners for supply - maybe demand, but its obvious that there is a large demand in the local population as well. |

And if Im causing no harm
It shouldnt bother you

And whats from the earth
Is of the greatest worth
So before you knock it try it first
Youll see its a blessing
And not a curse

i don't mind people burn their fire as lang as they burn it when they're off. giggling or talking rubbish in class is totally not acceptable. |

I guess Aristotle is hoping for a COMPETENT occupational government. Maybe he'll join it? |
