Running an English conner is easy. However you do it must be fine. An English corner on the other hand... Smile

Hi,

In the dark depths of time I used to run an English Corner in China. The first few times I did it were very informal. I would basically turn up in the school square and be crowded by kids all asking me about England / life and the universe.

When I figured out the core groups of attendees we split them into groups - older kids and younger kids, then discussed something specific that they were interested in each time.

Ideas:
films / movies
superheroes
food
music
holidays and holiday activities

If I were you I would go with a blank canvas and take the lead from the kids. Just be ready to field personal questions - they love to get the gossip about their teachers!

Good luck
Laura

Hi laura1d

Thank you for your information on the English Conner.

What I left out was I am the first foreign teacher here in this college and theses new students that comes next week have very poor English level some only know 10 words or lower. thats what I have been told, some of them have not had a foreigner before.

It means I will have a hard job teaching theses students in the first place and then I was asked to setup an english conner in November this year because the leader as seen this in other colleges and want to set one up in his college I have told the leader it will be hard for them to learn english in the first place but as you know many leaders don't understand or listen. I don't want to push it here. Sad

so what should I do?

Easy go_ABs this is a newbie forum.

Hey Riddick, for you first class, just try to have an informal introduction session. You need to learn a little about your students and their level before you can start some serious lesson planning.

Here's a suggestion for first session.

Introduce yourself. Explain where your from, why you like teaching, what you love about the country your in (be as positive as possible). Try to tell some funny, embarrassing, silly stories that maybe have happened to you recently(cultural misshaps, they love this stuff !)
. Very Happy

Ask the students if they have any questions for you. If you receive a bunch of blank stares, don't worry.

Next, Now have the students pretend to be reporters and start interviewing each other, make sure to include yourself in this activity.
This is a good way for the students to get to know each other, and will help you learn their level, likes and dis-likes. It is easy to prepare and fairly light-hearted for the students.

Here are some questions that the "reporters" can ask. Its up to you weather you want to give this as a hand out of write on the board, or just keep in your notes. These are just some simple suggestions, add what you like and remove what you don't like Very Happy

Remember, try to have fun..its contagious..the students will enjoy it alot more.

What is your name?

Where are you from?

Have you visited a foreign country?

If you have, Which country/countries?

How old are you?

How tall are you?

How do you come to school?

Did you watch TV last night?

Do you know how to type?

Can you use a computer?

What is your student number?

How many are in your family?
.
Do you like to go to movies?

Who is your favorite actor/actress?

Do you like soccer?

Who is your favorite baseball player?

Do you have a driver's license?

Do you like English?
.

Hi Stosskraft

Thank you for the information you have given me.

"go_ABs"

I see that you are not a nice teacher, why make enemys? when you can make friends that is what I was told about Dave's Cafe thats why I join.

Here is a question for you.

Every students level of english is different some very poor in listen and some in speaking and if you had a class of 48 students how can you teach the ones that are slow in learning? would you spend you free time and teach them to catch up or will you leave them?.

Now Me
I have been living in China fore over one & haft years as a real teacher I have face many problems in my first College but I can't blame all of China, I think most of you on here had problems in your first or maybe not but now I am in my second College. so I am just asking anyone on here what would you do if it was you class?

Have a nice day. Very Happy

In all fairness to go_ABs, you really do need to pay more attention to your spelling, grammar and punctuation.

I'm far from perfect and I'm not trying to be condescending here, it's just something that I can't help but notice. If a geography teacher thought the Earth was flat, I'd be saying a similar thing. Very Happy

Do I detect shades of a former poster aka Bulldog and British Bulldog? Riddick, would you be so kind as to tell us what country you're from and what your first language is?

Edit: The reason I asked these questions is because I've been involved with Speaking Corners for almost 10 years. In the university EFL program where I teach, we've found that for some reason far more students sign up for Speaking Corners when native English speakers conduct them than when local teachers are in charge of them.

I just deleted an offensive posting in this thread. My recommendation is that you stay on topic and not attack other members because of their opinions or how they write.

Hi Ben Round de Bloc.

I will answer your Question, I was born in England why? I do not know who was "Bulldog and British Bulldog" its my frist time here. I don't see what this has to do with the topic do you?

Hi Heresy.

Don't pick on my writing or spelling I don't really care if I miss out "grammar and punctuation" I will never pick on other for theirs I see no reason too are we teachers or children I am only here to make friends not enemys.

Hi Mr. Kalgukshi

I thank you for trying to keep this topic on track, its a shame that others don't see it that way and just want to cause trouble if it was me I would just give them a warning.

I hope everyone as an nice day. Very Happy

Why have the last 4 post have nothing to do with the OP?

Are you guys going to help Riddick with his English corner, or just give him a hard time?
