What are the going rates for new and used motorbikes on the island?
Starting with 50cc to 150cc?
Can one operate a motorscooter without an international driver's license?
Are motorscooters stolen often? |

You can get a decent secondhand bike for between 8000NT$ and 15000NT$. Of course you can pay more or less. Try to get something that is at least 100cc.
Not sure about the International driver's license. I think its ok for a year. Getting a scooter license in Taiwan is relative easy. The actual practical part is a joke.
I never had one stolen, nor do I know anyone who had their's stolen. |

50cc you don't need a license at all as far as I know. Anything over 50cc you need a license but a license from Canada or USA will do. |

I agree with the prices that Mark has outlined above, although I have had mixed experiences with second hand bikes. I've had two since I have been here. One was excellent and lasted for years before I ended up giving it to a friend. The second was a real lemon. I bought both of them from bike shops.
More recently I bought a brand new 125cc scooter and it has been excellent. I don't use it much anymore as I tend to drive more so if you want to buy a good bike in Taipei you could check this one out. It won't be as cheap as some of the bikes you can get, but at least you know that it is good. I keep it garaged too for what that is worth. PM me if you are interested.

That was the case years ago but this has now changed. You need a Taiwan drivers/riders licence for all vehicles now. If you are going to ride a bike in Taiwan getting a licence here is a good idea. The testing process is both cheap and easy to do.

That is not correct. There is some reciprocation between Taiwan and some other countries but this is limited. Even in the US there are only two states or something with which Taiwan reciprocates with licences.
The international drivers licence is only valid for a month unless you get it validated by the motor authority in Taiwan. The problem is that if you are living in Taiwan they may not validate it and instead push for you to get a Taiwan licence.
My advice is come and get a licence here. Don't buy a scooter under 100cc. And don't buy from the scooter shop on the corner of Badeh and Keelung Roads in Taipei! |

Clark, do you happen to know which two states these might be?
My guess is that they would likely be west-coast states, and since
I am from Washington I thought I should try my luck. |

Looks like I was wrong. Although I am a sure that this must have changed recently.
It seems that there is only one state in the US that recognizes Taiwan licences and therefore has recopricity here and that is Oklahoma. |
