I read a book by an expat teacher who worked in North Korea, and one of the things in it that I found interesting was his statement about the behaviour of visiting North Korean high school students from Japan. I was quite surprised to read that they were more fanatical about their dear leaders statues than the North Koreans. Furthermore I wasn't aware that there was a North korean Highschool in Japan. Anyone know where it is or have any information about it. |

they have been brainwashed.
If they had lived in North Korea, they would know better.
There must be more than one North Korean high school in Japan. |

I used to date a girl who went to Korean school in Sakai. She told me all the Korean schools in Japan are actually North Korean.
From what she told me most of the students take what is taught to them with a pinch of salt. The students live in japan, they know what really goes on in North korea. They also had to go on a school trip to Pyongyang. Apparently it wasnt optional!! She said it wasnt too bad in North korea, except the food. She said that in one week not one of the North koreans asked a single question about Japan. No doubt they were warned not to talk about Japan. |

I would imagine the North Korean Government carefully screens each student before giving permission and sponsorship to study in Japan! The country can't afford to feed masses of people so coming here is a special privilege probably only given to Kim's inner circle! I am only speculating! |

no, the schools are for Japanese born Koreans. The girl I dated was the second generation of her family that were born in japan. She got a South Korean passport instead of North Korean cos getting Visas to travel was difficult and her dad has refused to speak to her ever since! |

When I lived in Japan for two years--not as a teacher--, I ran into a number of students that get educated in Korean Schools, North and South, and I'll tell you, compared to their Japanese schools' counterparts, their English was so good. In fact, a grade 11 student could hold a fluent conversation with me. She had awesome pronunciation as well. |

Are you saying the schools are for Koreans born in Japan? If so why were they born in Japan, because of WWII?
I take it her dad is North Korean. How come she got the option of getting a south Korean passport? Do all North Koreans have that option!
Please excuse my ignorance on this subject! |

In a nut shell: During Japan's period of exspansion (prior to and during WWII) Korea was a colony of Japan. This means that Koreans held Japanese passports and were able to travel to Japan. Many Koreans were brought to Japan to provide labour in factories and mining. After the war Korea was taken away from Japan. Thus all the Koreans living in Japan lost their Japanese passports. |

She told me her Grandparents are from South Korea and came to japan cos they didnt like Americans in South korea. Her family had a choice between a North Korean or a South Korean passport and they chose North. She said there was no problem for her changing her passport to South Korean. I am not entirely sure when her family came to Japan but i assume it was during the Korean War.
She has no respect for North Korean schools at all. Reckons they cost a fortune and that the education is pure garbage. |

I heard that one reason that the schools are "North Korean" schools is that after the war the Korean community here was in obviously a bad way and they faced intense discrimination from the Japanese and the South Korean government did not support them but guess who did, the North Korean government and that is why there is sometimes an apparent soft spot for North Korea, they helped when no one else did. I was told this by two elderly Korean-Japanese acquaintances in Osaka. I don't know how close it is to the truth. |
