i just came back from celebrating my first round and i'm still somewhat coherent... so far so good. This is the first official dinner that i have gone through without having to taste baijiu... gotta love it. i'm dreading the lunchtime repeat tomorrow.
on the bright side, the school decided to pay my september salary 13 days before due date.. that's a first!!!! |

Someone said Sunday is teachers' day this year, someone else said it is Saturday, but today (which is Friday) the kids have no school and I have the day off other than the big event this evening.. an annual musical dinner celebration..?? where our talented teachers can use their vocal cords.. and I must say I am impressed with the talent. I communicated that I will not be attending as all is in Chinese, and an adjustment has been made to add a English component to the program... which I did not feel was an overwhelming endorsement though.. I feel that this is their party...the Chinese party , this is how it feels.. |

My school is giving us and "allowance". Maybe mommy and daddy like their their teachers.
I also found out that female teachers get a half-day off for International Women's Day. |

My college engages in divestiture.
Teachers' Day this year was Saturday the 10th. Schools and students will do different things, but it's not usually a day off from teaching. Besides, if you have classes on that day, your students will give you gifts!
Anyway, I like the idea, but I'd prefer to work in a place where the school/college actualy does something nice as opposed to nothing. |

Nothing for us here FT, but my students and formers keep sending me happy emails ...
The Chinese teachers received flowers and 200RMB.
A Chinese polite way to remind you that
1) we are different
2) we are not welcome
The date Sept. the 9th. |

I posted this last year, but I remember my last school on Teacher's Day had given all the Chinese teachers a bonus. I don't think it was much, maybe 500rmb. When I asked why the foreign teachers didn't get one, I was told that this was CHINESE Teacher's Day. The year before last ALL teachers received fruit and other food gifts in celebration of the event (and maybe the CTs received bonuses - - I didn't think to ask at that time). So I asked why we received Chinese Teacher's Day gifts the year before, but no bonus this year. No reply. . . |

On Friday the students gave me flowers and the last class of the day was a classroom party. Students did some talent show, had the teachers play games and other stuff. Kinda fun... The school gave me a 1000 RMB bonus, gave me a nice gift, and we had a large banquet lunch thing on Saturday with all the teachers at a nice restaurant.

At my school they said that they don't give foreign teachers extra money for teachers day because we already get paid much more than the Chinese teachers do. It makes sense. I, however was lucky enough to be the first foreign teacher to receive a teachers day bonus because the principal likes me. We also had a huge banquet at a private villa with more food and beer than I could handle. The Chinese teachers all got huge bouquets and chocolates from students' parents, but I'm the new kid on the block so I just got smiles and waves. I think Teacher's Day is a nice idea. I think Women's Day is even more brilliant. |

Hmm..
Last year, I got cute gifts from each class on Teacher's day as it was a Friday. The school didn't give us anything.
This year, the key university of the city organized a gathering of all the foreign teachers in the city. We had lunch and some programs in the afternoon. As for my students, I received some emails saying Happy Teachers Day and a gift from a former class. I guess they weren't able to find me that day. Also, a student's parent invited me for dinner so it was ok. |

The big day passed pretty quietly here.
I got a few phone calls but nothing official. Sad, in the old days they used to wine and dine me, now I am like stale meat nobody wants to eat anymore.
That analogy doesn't really work but you get the point. A student called to send her regards and it made me sad that I won't be teaching her anymore this semester (as I've been doing for the past 3). Other than that, not a peep.
I wouldn't mind some flowers or something but when they gave me 100 zongzi during the Dragon Boat Festival I just ended up throwing them all away. |

Stale meat....I like that. In Korea, FTs are disposed of around month 5- that is when the bored sets in. How long does it take for schools to get bored with their FTs in China? |
