Union woes... Caught between the devil and the deep blue sea

This is a followup note from the previous posting of two weeks ago (if you go down the postings list you will see it)....

First of all, a workplace update. Faring a little better... I guess I've been feeling a little happier lately, but the problems haven't gone away. Some have been clarified a little, and one has been diminished somewhat. But it's complicated. In any case, I'm like a duck: trying to look graceful floating on the pond, but underneath the water: paddling like hell. Smile

Well, I've had some contact with the union.... And the reply I got was a little disappointing. The NUGW's reponse (verbatim) was:

Due to the distances involved, what we could offer you is not
membership, but occasional consultation at no charge. Kofu is simply too far away, and our numbers too few, for us to participate actively in bargaining or other support activities.

In other words, get lost! At least they are honest in that regard and don't try to bullshiat me with false ideals and hopes in an attempt to sign me up to get more money...

Which leads me to the main question of the day: Can anyone direct me to another union -- perhaps one that would be willing to accept our membership and (if needed) engage in collective bargaining, should the need arise???

Jim,

If your problems are that bad, why don't you invest in the time and money to visit the union?

Hi Jim,
I have contacted my branch down here to ask for advice. I will post as soon as I receive a reply.
Incidentally, as a little boost for your hopes, in a recent case handled by the Fukuoka General Union, a settlement was reached involving Y1.3 million, 6 weeks paid holiday, introduction of unemployment insurance, removal of fines for lateness and contract non-completion, legal period of notice required, freedom to find other accommodation, etc.
Keep your spirits up.

Glenski: Yes, it's been suggested to me that I may have to speak to the union reps in person, however when they come right out and tell me up front that I'm wasting my time, I don't think I will bother... That's why I'm asking if anyone can provide any alternatives (such as another union that can meet our needs)...
I can certainly travel to Tokyo should the need arise.... and like you say, if it were really that bad, I likely would have done so already or quit. But I'm still keeping my head above water, and trying to do things systematically. Though I complain loudly, I'm also a very patient person (comes with the territory I guess) Smile and I believe that something will crystalize soon if I let it. I cannot afford to make a rash decision at this juncture -- one that would put at risk my employment (or my sanity)....
Just to give you an idea, there are enough people that I speak to on a daily basis that live in the same city who work for other companies where the conditions are certainly worse. Some have left and are currently looking for other employment (like at my company).. Smile So I need to tread lightly or I'll be gone in a flash, nothing will have changed, and the company will still see 90% turnover yearly and wonder why.....

Nath: Thanks very much... I'm glad you've seen that kind of success! I only hope that your company is decertified (if/when all the unionized employees leave or their contracts expire) the changes you have effected will remain and they will not revert to their old methods.....

Thanks also for looking into my matter with your local.

Cheers,

JD2
