I've just watched his speech on tv. What do you reckon about his English?
Like most German speakers he has problems with voiced and unvoiced th /w/ is also a problem and /b,d,g/ as final sound come out as / p,t,k/ respectively. Other than that there is only one other thing that I notice......this is where I get slated. He sounds camp/gay. Is there such a thing as a gay/camp accent? I have access to ELT journal and Litsearch and had a look but I can't find anything.

Any thoughts or links?

I can't find a link but I know what you mean! I'll keep looking, maybe it could be a ground breaking new theory for someone's PhD thesis!!!

Addition: I hadn't heard him myself when I wrote the above, I now have and found his way of speech frighteningly reminiscent of Herr Flick from the BBC comedy "Allo Allo". Maybe he suspects that the painting of "The Fallen Madonna with the big boobies" is secreted somewhere in Turkey!!

I like the Pope, the Pope smokes dope.

Maybe the Pope is a gay stoner? He and Tayip Erdoğan are getting mashed up in the name of Catholic-Muslim relations?

Heeee!

I bet Tayyip hogs the bowl.

I bet the Pope is the kind of guy who nicks your lighter.

The pope has a super strong Bavarian accent and when he speaks English that is what I hear. His Bavarian accent even then shows through, maybe that is what sounds so camp to you?

Possibly him too, but I meant Pope Begendik - now, who remembers THAT supermarket in the bowels of Carousel in Bakirkoy?

A nunnery in Liverpool. A nun rushes into the mother superior's office, looking distinctly post-coital. Mother Superior says 'Eh, what are you lookin' so happy about?'
The nun says 'Benny dictus'

*coat, again*
