A few names come to mind. I think these are national schools plus. You can do web searches.
Sekolah Tiara Bangsa
Sekolah Pelita Harapa
Global Jaya
I interviewed at Sekolah Tiara Bangsa once. They teach some expat kids there. They try to incorporate as much English and high quality ed as the government will allow. The government imposes all kinds of test requirements on certain grade levels, but I don't know how those applyt o the 'plus' schools.
Pelita Harapan is sort of a Christian school. There are plenty of ORU and Rhema grads that I met there. Like a high school in the US, you would have to really put in your time there. When I was there, they went to work at 7 something and worked until late in the afternoons. Wages for expats started around 19k. That was several years ago before and during the drop in value of the rupiah. Teachers at the school were required to wear uniforms-polyester blazars in the tropical heat (like a reasonable summer here in the South.)
The head of the yaysan that owns the school seems to be a nice man. He's into collecting art, and has great paintings in his house. I used to tutor one of his kids. His youngest daughter went to SPH. She spoke just about like a native speaker. At the time, a number of expat kids were going to SPH, and that probably helped her English.
If you teach at one of these schools, you need to be a 'real teacher.' There may be some room for being an ESL teacher since not all kids speak it, but you have to really know your stuff, and not just be a backpacker off the plane. A lot of the kids know English, and they need an English teacher like an English teacher in teh states. |
