Is it difficult to get a teaching job in Lima, Peru, and most importantly can you live on a teachers pay in Lima.

I dont see many posts on Lima Peru so I was just curious. I was thinking of heading down there in Feb.

Thanks!

I 've heard that you spend a lot on time commuting, and it's expensive, but there are lots of languge schools down there.

Im currently living and working in Lima, Ive been in Peru for 2 months now and Im loving it. Working in Lima...I just looked up in the yellow pages for institutes and got a job at the first one I went to. Simple as that?? Well it depends...from what I gather they were looking for teachers at the time but being a native is a huge advantage. Lima is pretty cheap to live, but if you were living in Miraflores, Barranco or San Isidro you would pay a lot more, $400 a month but you see why. As for the commuting that all depends on where you work and if your place is near...like anything really but there are sooo many buses here so getting places is no probs. Any other questions Id be happy to help Very Happy

Thanks JPaulin,
I should be in Lima beginning of this February. I have a few more questions.
As far neighborhoods to live in what areas are less expensive(than Miraflores) and are somewhat safe.
What is the average pay for a teacher in Lima?
Basically Im asking is it possible to live on a salary of a teacher in Lima.
I will be coming down some money to back me up, but I really do not want to spend money out of the savings to live and work in Lima.
How long you thinking of living there for?

Thanks

Hey there

Im living in Callao and Im just renting a room at this stage as Im only working part time but even with that salary I can cover all my expenses easily. You can find restauants that offer menus for 4 soles and its a decent meal. All the buses will charge you 1 sol. Most of the institutes are in Miraflores, San Isidro but the big institutes are closer to Callao as well (in San Miguel) eg Britanico, ICPNA and Euroidiomas and they can pay anything up to $10 an hour. Apparently Im paid well for part time and it can range from 600 soles to 1500 soles a month but it really depends on what job you get. You can find nice mini apartments for $80 up to $150 a month, the classifieds are a good bet. If you wanna pay a little extra to be closer or pay less and commute its up to you.

Im probably gonna be living here until next December but it depends! Perus an amazing place and has it all...who knows!

Hope this was of some help

If you're looking for something next to Barranco or Miraflores try Chorrillos. I've visited most of the other districts and I really liked Chorrillos, because you get a chance to get away from most of the Americans and Europeans who don't tend to visit over there and get more of a taste of what Peru is really like, plus you'll find it less expensive to live there and still cheap to get everywhere in Lima, even by Taxi.

Don't know about teaching there, but TRujillo is really pretty. Very quaint. I would like to live there if I could find a good job there.
