| I am moving to Taichung in about a month (end of august) and I am wondering if anyone who is currently teaching there knows of any available positions. I have been in contact with a number of different schools, but still haven't committed to a job. I will contact the schools again when I arrive and hopefully interview. If anyone teaching there knows of an opening at their school, let me know! I would appreciate any help finding a job. Thanks so much!!! |

Although no warning or advisory has been posted Taichung is fast becoming the most dangerous city to live on Taiwan.
Unbridled gangs and the standard incompetent police force have increased violent crime to all time levels and made Taichung a very hazardous place to live and work.
The lack of anything resembling reliable public transportation and little to no enforcement of traffic regulations only adds to the problem.
There are a high number of universities in a small area, all able to effectively offer student ARC's for part time students which has made Taichung one of the lowest paying areas on Taichung as well.
I would strongly recommend you start in Taipei then move South as you get a feel for the island.
On the positive side Taichung is a very cheap place to live because of the lower standard of living.

oregon_girl - Just have a look at Aristotles other posts and his website and you will safely see that you can disregard most of what he says.
Taichung city is a fine place to live and work, and it seems to me to be improving everytime I visit there. |

| Are there any cheap and safe hotels/hostels near the train station in Taichung? Where is the best place to begin looking for job positions when I arrive? Thanks so much for any help!! |

The best hostel I've found is on Mei-Tsun south of Gung Yi.
(Seriously, it was amazingly cheap and luxurious.)
It's called the Taiwan Hostel CSF or something like that. Unfortunately I don't have the phone number from last year when I stayed there, but a bit of Googling reveals the following text from 2002:

lived there for 9 months and made tons of money. Never experienced anything worse than a mosquito bite. |

look slightly outside of taichung like in places like Fengyuang and Tantzu for example. You can basically walk into any ESL school with a degree and a cute smile and get a job making NT 58,000 plus benefits. I had people stopping me on the street on my motorbike, asking me to work at their schools. |

bring the hard copies. the school will photocopy them, but they might want to see the real things. Are you just flying over and looking once you get there? |

Have you noticed any abc or cbc teaching in Taichung? I've been contemplating between Taipei, Taichung, Kiaoshung, and Seoul for a while now. I'm tending to lean toward Taiwan b/c of the language. Just want to analyze my chances before jumping into a hairy situation.  |
