I know this has been asked before, but where are the vacant apartments. I just got to Santiago and havent found anything. I looked in the Mercurio today (Sunday) and found nothing. If anyone knows of anything that is available in your apartment or elsewhere Id appreciate the info. Thanks!

What comunas have you been looking in? If you limit your search to only Las Condes and Providencia, you'll have far fewer choices. Also consider looking for things in the following comunas/neighborhoods:

Santiago Centro
Bellavista
La Reina
Estacion Central
La Florida (a bit far, but fairly nice suburban feel)
Barrio Brasil
Nunoa
Maipu (nice but very very far to the east, so only look here if you want to commute or if you're job's on the east side of downtown)

Also be sure that you're not only looking for "departamentos." Look also under piezas, habitaciones, and even casas. If you get a couple roommates together, you can easily afford to rent a small house a bit further out from downtown.

If you've already been doing all that and still haven't found anything, I'm not sure what to suggest. There is now a craigslist page for Santiago, but it's not very full. Still, might be worth checking out: http://santiago.craigslist.org/

I don't live in Chile anymore, so I can't fill you in on the latest hot spots for good rent etc., but if you have any questions, feel free to PM me and I'll do my best to help.

You could also try checking out message boards outside of supermarkets. If your Spanish is good enough, you can find some good, affordable apartments. I always used to look at the Unimarc supermarket on avenida Portugal, between Alameda and Diagonal Paraguay.
