|
|
Does anyone know, heard about a non-native English teachers teaching in Asia?
I came to the USA, from Poland, when I was 23 years old; now I am 33, so I have been in the States for 10 years. In the meantime I have received M.A. in English with emphasis on second language acquisition.
and have been teaching ESOL for almost 5 years in a communitycollege.
I have great reviews from both my supervisors as well as students.
I admit that I have a slight accent and some gaps in vocabulary but that only very seldom impedes my performance in the class.
I would be interested in teaching mainly in a college or university but
I am not disregarding other offers.
If there is anyone who knows about opportunities for people like me,
please let me know.
Thank you kindly,
Janusz |

Janusz:
Asia is a big place. Is there any specific country that you are interested in? If you mention a specific country, you will probably receive more useful advice.
There are always openings in Chinese universities. You just need to start doing internet searches for all of the job sites and sending out resumes. Post a notice on the ESL Cafe "Post Your Resume" forum. |

I went to New Zealand in 66; I was then 26. I got all my education there, Holland did not do me much good beyond extended primary education.
In NZ I learned English the "natural "way; no special help at all, eventually I got two degrees, one for teaching and one BA.
When I got fed up and burned out, ESL became a possibility.
Now I am in China, in Shenzhen and doing very well.
The Dutch accent, which I cannot shake off, is of no consequence, it is accepted as a variety of English pronunciation.
What I found most valluable is my experience as a teacher for many years was the ability to function as an organised person;most "teachers" here hav n o professional skills.
So for you: for you, forget about your imagined barriers,.
your professional ability is more to the point. |

Peter and janusz,
that was a fine post, Peter, and I would like to add that I have seen ESL speakers even from Asian and African countries teaching in China - in spite of well-known local prejudices!
However, one proviso: SInce so few of us are teaching professionals, janusz had better be informed that working and living here offers some downsides that one has to put up with and shut up about.
As a Westerner, I seek more than mere gain, I also want satisfaction. Satisfaction can have many sources, but in China, your satisfaction depends on sources outside of discharging your duties. For a man like you, janusz, what China holds in store for you might be frustrating - unless you lower your expectations considerably! |

Janusz, are you a Polish or a US citizen?. If you are a US citizen and have finished scholl in the US, very very few places in Asia will reject you. Usually if a rejection happens, it will be from a small place that wants "real" Americans. I have not heard that happen to Poles, though.
Now, if you were a citizen of Poland and finished college there, you would not be considered a native speaker by many but some places would hire you still.
US passport, US name ( first name) and US degree will guarantee you a job. |

Gabe, Janusz's original enquiry was posted on the first day of March 2003! Since he has only ever made two postings, I doubt he is still lurking on this forum 2 1/2 years later!
Check the date of an original enquiry before resurrecting a ye olde thread! |
