Hi there, I have basically accepted a part-time job in Vientiane that would allow me to work for other schools. Does anyone know of any schools looking for teachers right now? I will be arriving later this month (September)
thanks |

Well the TEFL market here is still in its infancy. There are several cowboy schools and some others that seem to hire any native speaker, regardless of qualifications.
Vientiane College is the only school that seems to pay its teachers well and run a 'real school', but they have very little turnover.
There is another called Lao American, but I haven't been in contact with them yet.
ACL and Logos seem to be OK but don't offer any further development for their staff, and again you'll find yourself working with mainly backpackers. These pay around $10 an hour but can offer little more than 15 hours a week.
There are also some jobs to be had teaching very young learners in the mornings, but these jobs seem to be for female teachers only.
It's a lovely place, but not a place to come if you are looking to develop your TEFL career. |

I went to see the American owner in 2002. She's been in Laos since it opened its borders and knows her stuff about Vientiane. Some says she's umm perhaps been in the tropics too long, and her school's not up to much. She's worth going to see though. |
