Do any of you have cute or amusing language stories you'd like to share with the rest of us?
I'm laughing at the moment because I just saw a job ad that said in part, "after hiring, the person will be implanted in Shanghai", and I thought, "Gee, this guy's getting himself in pretty deeply."
But then I can recall so many truly endearing, and sometimes hilarious, expressions from my students over the years.
In one case, a student of mine (a young woman) had just gotten her first job here and was receiving lots of compliments from the staff on her language ability. And she told me, "They didn't really mean it. They were just trying to nice me." Couldn't have said it better in English.
Anyway, all of you must have some of these stories to tell that might lift our spirits a bit if you would share them.
Cheers, |

I teach kids. Only a few lessons into the year, and we'd covered body parts and colours and such. Getting ready for a new lesson, I was sitting on a chair, writing on the blackboard. A couple of girls came up and smiled at me, so I smiled back. "Teacher," said one, "yellow. Teeth."
"Why thank you."
I've been brushing more regularly ever since. |
