I've read so many threads, and Im so confused. There is so much contradicion about violence in Russia. Some say it's overblown, and others say it's not. Im sure there is some stuff going on, but the question is how much, and is it as bad as people say it is? I hear about police corruption, skinheads, foreigners getting attacked, especially people with tan or dark skin. But most everything I have read about violent acts, etc. has been by a third party or someone who had a friend of a friend who was assaulted, etc. Can somebody please clear this up once and for all. And if anyone has had 1st hand experience of anything bad happening to them in Russia, would you please post up. Im particularly concerned about Moscow and St Petersburg, as those are the places I'd be if I eventually go there.

I was mugged at a rural railway station by two drunks a couple of years ago just outside Moscow.

I was also mugged once in Paris and I was also once robbed in Portsmouth U.K.

Each time I was unfortunately in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I wouldn't worry about violence in Russia - it's probably more important to worry about violence wherever you call home.

I have been here for two years without any trouble. The only dealings with police that I have had was once a few weeks ago I had to go answer some questions about one of the schools I worked durning the summer for last year at a police station, seems like that school is trying to press charges against another school for stealing clients as if I would know anything about that. I only taught at that school for three months filling in during the summer, but that is how it goes with some schools I guess. But outside of that, I have not had any trouble at all, never been robbed, never been threaten, never had any trouble here at all.

What is it with inappropriately large avatars on here recently? I mean, is there any need?

Two years in Moscow without any problems. And one police check.

I should say at the outset that I am not a "party animal" - that has a lot to do with how many problems you get, it seems.

8 months in Surgut (a long, long way from where you're planning to go, but...), no trouble at all! It seems I'm a curiosity rather than a target.

Just one other thing; I saw more drunks at home than I've seen here! It's a great place!!
