Just out of interest, what effect do you think that next year's election might have on living in Lima around that time? I'm guessing lots of protests and flares. What other excitement can we expect? |

I don't think that there will be that many protests and flares. All of Peru's presidents have been corrupt, it's a matter of the people voting for the person who they think is the smaller thief. Fujimori, Garcia and Toledo are the candidates and they have all acted as president. It won't be any different from before. |

What's with Fujimori running again? When my boyfriend told me that I thought he was joking. What country drives a president out of the country for being corrupt and then lets him run for president again? Weird huh? |

I lived in Peru two years ago and the Fujimori supporters were already painting FUJIMORI 2006 signs on all the walls back then. I couldn't figure out why they would want to re-elect this man. So, I asked some of my Peruvian friends about it. Here is what they said.
Peruvians are very "forgiving" and stupid. They remember all the good things he did for the country, but choose to forget all the evil and corruption. They also think if someone else is elected, he will be corrupt too and may not do any of the good things Fujimori did during his last term. So, bad + unknown = bad, and bad + some good = good. Go figure. |

I've talked to hardcore Limeos, everybody thinks things will be OK for the most part. That said, there are huge demonstrations at least once a week, usually more, and these people lived through fairly regular bombings for upwards of 10 years. So OK might be a relative term. But it seems a garauntee of safety and major headaches.
On the other hand, if Fujimori wins, I'm leaving |
